What is the biblical standard for "visions". Does anyone have a complete definition that is biblically based. In other words, not just one example but what the WHOLE Bible says on this issue? I know it gets down to that God speaks to each of us individually in a way that is unique and personal but does the Bible say that a vision must be like-------- in order to be a "true vision".

Peter teaches (2 Peter 1:17-21) that the Word is a superior message from God than even the personal experience of hearing God's voice (Matthew 17:5). If that be so, then I would treat any vision as a less certain and less personal communication to you than what you have in the Bible. It may be less spectacular, less novel, and less exciting... but it is something in which you can have complete confidence.

Just to add to Docs answer: Gal 1:8 says "But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!" And Paul says in 2 Cor 11:14 "No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light." Also regarding the lying prophet in 1 Kings 13: "He said to him, "I also am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, 'Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.'" But he lied to him." These are all examples of warnings against being lured into believing false doctrine or guidance. Additionally, the closing of the canon of Scripture should also warn us that no further revelation of doctrine is to be given by God today. Indeed, one could argue that any claims to have recieved additional revalation of doctrine should be summarily rejected as false. - T |
