Greetings Steve! I'm not sure! I didn't say that I personally believe that Rom. 8:26 is a reference to tongues, but it is a reference I have heard. I suppose they would say that since tongues is a spiritual gift and that ultimately it is the Holy Spirit who speaks through us. Let me address your specific questions though: 1) Words cannot expressed: This word (expressed/alaletos) is only used once in the New Testament. Some feel that it should be translated as 'unspoken' or 'without words'. We can pray without speaking the words, yet we still express our thoughts in a language silently. This could be similar to what Paul says in 1 Cor. 12-14 when he speaks of praying to ourselves. 2) Language made up of words: see above. 3) Passage speaking in tongues: I'm not sure I believe it, but I can see it. The connection comes from the fact that the Holy Spirit is helping us pray. He literally is praying for us. Obviously, that prayer must mean something. Now, whether or not that concept can be extended to the Holy Spirit praying through us in tongues, I'm not sure! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Romans 8:26 tells us the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness, praying for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in our own words. This includes praying in the spiritual gift of tongues, but is not limited to praying in tongues only. With the help of the Holy Spirit, our petitions are perfect before God, whether we are praying with the spirit or praying with understanding (1Cor14:15). The purpose of the gift of tongues is to enable us to pray in a way that is not limited by our own knowledge or ability (1Cor14:2). By the same token when I was saved at age 11, I only found out about the so called “sinner’s prayer” after my salvation. I simply prayed “Jesus save me” over and over, as I could think of nothing else to pray. It did not matter, because God saw my heart. He wasn’t looking for a prayer that “touched all the bases”, He was looking at my heart. My prayer was simple and lacking, but the Holy Spirit prayed the perfect prayer for me before the Father! Praise the Lord! Jesus Saves! retxar |

retxar, Who is doing the utternace? Is it words or groanings? I see the Holy Spirit groaning, and it is not words. This fits with the context. Steve | ||||||

Have you ever prayed, struggling to know, let alone put into words, what you wanted to say, and had no idea what you needed to pray? Well I think that is the meaning of the word "groaning" here. So, I can't see it as the Holy Spirit being the one doing the groaning. I see it as the person praying who is groaning, and the Holy Spirit interceeding. Look up at Rom 8:22; "the whole creation groans ". Look up at Rom 8:23 "we ourselves groan". So I think in context, in verse 26 we are still groaning, not the Holy Spirit. Just the way I see it, bro. Greetings Retxar, I saw your response and decided to maybe shed some light on the subject. It is good you mentioned Context. Context is King. Let's look at the scriptures (NIV). We have every body groaning and we need to figure this one out! Romans 8:22-27 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. ***Ok, first childbirth pains are referring to the second coming of Christ (see Matthew 24:8, and Mark 13:8) These scriptures explain the groaning being events that happen on earth. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. ***We as Christians await the coming of Christ too. This states why we groan in our inner being: We are waiting for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. Our bodies are not redeemed, our souls are. When Jesus comes back our bodies will be redeemed too. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? ***We are saved in this hope (Faith) we are saved. We are redeemed in the Jesus that we cannot see, but we trust him. 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. ***We do not have it, so we wait patiently 26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. ***In the same way we groan for the coming of Jesus, the Spirit of God groans. He intercedes to the Father for us to a deeper level that we cannot understand. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will. ***And all of the interceeding is done according to God's will. This is kinda short, I will go more in depth if you want, but do not link tongues into this passage. Responding in Christian Love. In His Grace, Lewis. |

Greetings Lewis! You make some good points! However, it seems that either view is possible. It is possible that it is the Spirit who articulates the groanings, but it is also possible that it is believers who articulate the groanings through the "help" of the Holy Spirit. By no means, would I want to be dogmatic on this point. The verse simply isn't clear enough, though there are interesting parallels with 1 Cor. 14:2. The whole point of my response was the intial question of whether there are two kinds of tongues. 1 Cor. 12-14 makes it clear that there are two functions, if not kinds, of tongues. One is a public prophetic function and the other is a private worship or prayer fuction. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
