Subject: tongues: are there 2 kinds? |
Bible Note: Greetings Steve! I'm not sure! I didn't say that I personally believe that Rom. 8:26 is a reference to tongues, but it is a reference I have heard. I suppose they would say that since tongues is a spiritual gift and that ultimately it is the Holy Spirit who speaks through us. Let me address your specific questions though: 1) Words cannot expressed: This word (expressed/alaletos) is only used once in the New Testament. Some feel that it should be translated as 'unspoken' or 'without words'. We can pray without speaking the words, yet we still express our thoughts in a language silently. This could be similar to what Paul says in 1 Cor. 12-14 when he speaks of praying to ourselves. 2) Language made up of words: see above. 3) Passage speaking in tongues: I'm not sure I believe it, but I can see it. The connection comes from the fact that the Holy Spirit is helping us pray. He literally is praying for us. Obviously, that prayer must mean something. Now, whether or not that concept can be extended to the Holy Spirit praying through us in tongues, I'm not sure! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
