Tongues, as one of the signs of the in-dwelling of the Holy Ghost (Mark 16:17) can be found in Acts 2:4;10:46;19:6. Tongues, as a Spiritual gift can be found in 1 Corinthians 12, 13, and 14. WalkingTalkingBible |

I cannot agree with what you have written about speaking in tonques for this sign has ceased today. No one is speaking in tongues in this age of Grace. If they are then I am sorry to tell you that they are fakes. There are many fakes in this world today. There was a period in Acts but Paul tells us about this in Scripture. No one was more charismatic than Paul, yet the Lord revealed to him that those sign gifts were going to cease: "whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away" (1 Cor. 13:8 KJV). Now we turn to the prison epistles, the four letters written shortly after the end of the Book of Acts, while Paul was a prisoner in Rome—Ephesians, Colossians, Philemon and Philippians...and we find that there is not one word about tongues, or the gift of healing. Even where we might have expected Paul to write of tongues in the passage about being "filled with the Spirit" in Ephesians 5:17, he has nothing to say about tongues. And as for the gift of healing, we read of a co-worker of Paul's, Epaphroditus, who fell seriously ill during this time (Phil. 2:25-30) and Paul no longer had the gift of healing, and was no longer able to heal as he did only a few years earlier in Acts 28:9. The sign gifts were no longer operating at the time that Paul wrote the Prison Epistles. |

Greetings Ken John! 1 Cor. 13:8 certainly does talk about 'tongues' ceasing at some point. But, it is a matter of intepretation to claim that they have 'already' ceased. Verse 10 clearly describes the 'timing' of these gift's ceasing as when the perfect has come. There are several possible views of what the 'perfect' means. a) One views sees v. 10 as a reference to the completion of the New Testament. However, v. 12 makes this very unlikely. We don't have perfect knowledge now, or perfect understanding. In fact, from your arguement, 'tongues' ceased even before Scripture was completed. b) The most likely view ties the ceasation of tongues to the end times, at the second coming of Christ. Once we are resurrected or raptured, we will have perfect knowledge of God and know Him even as we are known. Further, nothing in Scripture indicates that God was no longer 'healing' through Paul and others. Most of your post is an arguement from silence, which is very dangerous. 'Tongues' is really one talked about in two New Testament books anyway. They are occasional documents. Acts mentions tongues because it was a part of the historical events surrounding the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and 1 Cor. mentions it because the gift was misunderstood and being abused. However, one cannot argue that the failure to mention it in other books means that it no longer existed. :-) Just a personal note if I may! I believe that one of the problems facing the church today is that we no longer yield to God's Spirit and allow Him to work through us supernaturally by gifting us for ministry. Far too often, we try to program growth! :-( Anyway, I just thought I would add my two cents my friend! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Scripture ... 1 Cor 13:8-10 .................... Tim - Tongues is temporal and will cease by itself (knowledge and prophecy, are also temporal and will cease when the perfect comes). Tongues is not tied to the perfect coming. |

Is there a Bible verse or verses that clearly indicate tongues will cease by itself? I don't see it in 1 Cor 13:8-10. How does this passage make a distinction between the cessation of tongues and the cessation of knowledge and prophecy? AMPLIFIED 1 Corinthians 13:8 Love never fails [never fades out or becomes obsolete or comes to an end]. As for prophecy (the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose), it will be fulfilled and pass away; as for tongues, they will be destroyed and cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away [it will lose its value and be superseded by truth]. |

1 Cor 13:8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 1 Cor 13:9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 1 Cor 13:10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. Kalos, it is based on the Greek words. prophecy and knowledge - will be done away (katargeo) - we know in part (meros) - when the perfect comes, the partial (meros) will be done away (katargeo) tongues - will cease (pauo) ... for more read post 115095 |

Steve: Thank you for your posts on this subject. After posting my question to you, I did some research on my own. I found strong evidence that in 1 Cor 13:8-10 'Paul uses a different word for the end of the gift of languages, thus indicating it will "cease" by itself, as it did at the end of the apostolic age' (MacArthur Study Bible, 1997, Word Publishing). Good work, Steve, kalos |
