Aramaic appears to have been the day to day language in Palestine. Koine (or common) Greek was the language of commerce in the Eastern Mediterranean since the days of the Alexandrian Empire. Latin and Hebrew appear to have been reserved for formal occasions and study. Jesus probably used Aramaic on a daily basis if for no other reason than the poor people he spoke to most likely spoke Aramaic. He probably also knew Hebrew since he was familier with the Old Testament and as a Jew would have received at least some education in the language. His father was a carpenter and perhaps Jesus worked for a while as one as well, therefore at least a basic knowledge of Greek may have been useful. |
