Clarification.............................................. Hello EdB, You bring up a very good point. It is quite possible that Jesus did not primarily speak Hebrew. However, we know that the Old Testament books of prophecy and the Torah were written in Hebrew. And we know that Jesus had an extensive knowledge of them even as a small boy (teaching in the temple when he was 12 years old). And He was often quoting Old Testament scriptures throughout His ministry. Therefore, I think it is clear that He at least knew Hebrew and spoke it sometimes. I fully admit that it doesn't say specifically in the Bible. But these ideas seem to make sense based on the little information that we have. |

Sir Pent Actually what Jesus read from and quoted from was the Septuagint which was written in Greek. It was completed about 100 years before Jesus to give the common man opportunity to have scripture. We know Jesus quoted from there from the sentence construction he used. EdB |

Defense of my answer............................................... Hello EdB, The King James Version of the Bible was written using words like "thee" and "thou" that have not been in common use for more than 100 years. However, although there are newer translations out there that are easier to read, some people still prefer the KJV. Similarly, I think we can assume that although there was a Greek translation available during Jesus time, that there were many people who prefered the old Hebrew texts. I think it is likely that the scriptures were still read in Hebrew at certain synagogues. And although the "common man" may have been more likely to be limited to understanding the Greek, the teachers of the law would definately be familiar with the older versions, just as many Bible scholars today study the original languages. Therefore, I think that it is a safe bet that Jesus would also have known the Hebrew language and be familiar with that version of the Old Testament writings. Finally, I would just like to say that it really doesn't matter very much what language Jesus spoke. We're all guessing, and the person who started this thread seems to have lost interest anyway. |

Sir Pent I'm sorry I didn't mean to upset you in any way. You just made what to me sounded like an authoritative statement that Jesus spoke mostly in Hebrew and I was just wondering what that was based on. I had always been trained to understand Jesus spoke Aramaic, probably some Hebrew and maybe Greek. My understanding was Hebrew was not often used almost like Latin in Catholic Mass. The Hebrew Language became a second language after Alexander the Great and the Greek language became the language of the civilized world. Hebrew didn’t experience a rise in popularity until the nation of Israel was founded and a need for a common language was realized. It was an awesome project since many words were forgotten and new terms had to be invented. We know Jesus quoted from the Septuagint, which to me is exciting because we have very early manuscripts of it. Therefore if Jesus read from it and didn’t say by the way you guys translated this wrong or this is missing then to me at least I’m assured we have accurate copies of the Old Testment. EdB |

Personal Note........................................ Hello EdB, Don't worry about it. I'm not upset in the least :) I apologize for answering in a way that came across as more authoritative than I have any right to be on this subject. My thoughts in this thread are simply educated guesses, and should be taken as such. As for the accuracy and authority of scriptural translations (such as the Septuagint), I whole-heartedly agree with you. In fact, I would hope that anyone wanting more thoughts on this subject would type in the number 15780 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right of the screen. |
