I found a good church and I've quit listening to TV evangelists so I've got a good start anyway. :) The only thing I need to work on is the regular Bible study, for some reason, I have a hard time doing that. I think it's because I'm more a skimmer reader, always have been and things like the Bible or text books are something you have to look at every word and for some reason, I can't do that, I lose my concentration by the time I get to the end of a sentence, forgot what was in the first part. I do a lot better listening to tapes than reading if it's important. In school, I wrote down everything but I couldn't get it reading. Even here, I skip a lot. The texts that have short sentences w/spacing inbetween paragraphs I can read but the ones where it's one huge paragraph, forget it! I just get bits and pieces, if anything. Anyway, I can follow a sermon good, I just have a hard time reading on my own. :( Then a sermon, you usually get a lot of background you don't get just reading too, I like that. :) Even if someone is telling you what's going on about what you're reading, you still can form your own opinions on whether what they say is right. |

Norrie, I would like to say that is okay, you don’t need to read, but I can’t. You need to read it for yourself. It takes discipline and that is something we have to learn as Christians to crucify the flesh and make it conform to what God wants. The body wants to take the easy way, to listen or to have someone explain it to us. Those are good things but they are no substitute for reading yourself. I know people that can’t read a thing but they read their bible each and every day why they disciplined their bodies. Norrie don’t start big, start at John or Genesis and make yourself read a verse or two with understanding, soon you will be reading more and getting more. Before you start reading pray and ask God to help you, if you make an honest effort God will open the scriptures to you like you never believed possible. I’m praying for you Ed |

OK, I'll try it again. I've tried before but just didn't seem to get much out of it but maybe I gave up too easy. Thanks! |

Norrie- Have you read any of the psalms? I agree with EdB and I don't think too many people would disagree that the books to start with are the gospels. But the psalms are so beautiful and say so many things we feel but just can't seem to put into words, sometimes. It is hard to get disciplined to reading. But I think that is part of the enemies work. Each time you sit down and read for even 10 minutes, consider it a victory. Another one praying for you - Debbie |

My pastor is going thru a different psalm every Sunday this summer. I have to admit, I've been following along, taking notes, but many times think good thing he explained that because I never would have gotten it. It makes sense when he says it but it makes no sense when I read it. Even the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, I always wondered "why don't you want Him?" until I heard it explained I have no wants because he fulfills them. I guess that old English went right over my head and I can quote that but never understood that one part. Then I always wondered why it seems to be talking about Him, then to Him, why switch back and forth like that? Usually in Sunday School, we go thru a book of the Bible, we're doing Amos and Hosea this quarter. I'll tell you what, if there wasn't study guides and going over it every week, I would be completely lost. :) |

Norrie- One translation of the bible that may help could be the Amplified bible. If you know of anyone that has it, look up Psalm 23:1. See if that translation makes it clear to you. I do know that every time you read the bible, you will get something more or find that it has anew impact in different ways in your life. Not like a good novel, but as a book that is living and speaks to you. Do not give up on the reading, sister. You may not always have a tape with you, but you can always have the Word. Debbie |
