Can you provide me with the scriptural basis for the act of being "slain in the Spirit". This is another Pentecostal practice for which I have been unable to find Biblical support. As always, your assistance is appreciated. |

Its true this pentecostal practice I do not agree with as well. Its seems to me only Paul was the only one who fell forward when he was slain in the spirit on the isle of pampos (spelling)..all the other ones that were slain...were slain and fell backwards and they were all heathens...Selah777...Go figure...Practices get adopted and thats how satan gets in with his deception and then it seems its the right way.. |

Selah777 Actually it was John on Patmos, and your right when believers come under the power or to worship they fall flat on their face in the awesome presence and glory of the Lord. When pagans come face to face they fall back almost as if to excape, Think about that! And I are Pentecostal to boot! Ed |

Do you have some scripture to back this up? (I realize this is an old one on here, but I just saw it.) The only scriptures that I usually hear anyone use to try to prove it's a biblical thing for believers to be "slain in the spirit" are 1)Acts 9:4 “Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” Up to this point Saul was not "saved" but was the persecutor of Christians. He “fell to the ground” before being "filled with the spirit" as shown in Act:s 9:17. Acts 9:17 “And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said “Brother Saul, the Lord who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” John 18:6 “Then --- when He said to them, “I am He.” --- they drew back and fell to the ground.” The soldiers with Judas who were unbelievers, “drew back and fell to the ground”. And Revelation 1:17 "And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, 'Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last'." That verse does not say that John did anything in the spirit, nor that God did anything to make him fall, but simply that he fell to Christ's feet apparently in fear --- since Jesus told him not to be afraid. So I would appreciate any scripture than you have that would prove believers were ever "slain in the spirit". Another question pertaining to this subject. Why would one who has died to self (born again of the spirit) (and was filled with the spirit) need to be "slain (killed) in the Spirit" by God? This strikes me as something that is similar to "holy laughter" and the recurring reverence for angels these days. |

I don't think there are any. Your right the scriptures you listed above are the usual ones listed. To me it is not conclusive proof, also as I said in my last response to this question. In very instance when a God fearing man or woman came into the presence of the Lord they fell face forward prostrate at God's glory. Lev 9:24; Num 16:4, 16:22, 16:45, 20:6, 22:31; 1Sam 28:20; 1Kings 18:29; Ez. 9:8, 11:13, Matt 17:6; Luke 5:12; Rev 1:17, 22:8 In the "slain in the spirit' manifestation the people fall backwards, away from God's glory. I think in that is a important indication of what is taking place. Hope this helps |

Ed - I agree, it's another twist of Scripture, so people can do it their way, not the Lord's. Steve | ||||||

Do you think this may be just another attempt by Satan to imitate God? "Slain in the spirit" may be just a very showy way in which Satan attempts to imitate through men what God's words say about "dying to self" or "renewing the spirit"? Satan is a great imitator and mocker. I think the whole "holy laughter" thing may be similar in that it too is an imitation of the real thing -- the joy of the Lord. |

The only reference in the Bible that I can think of that would justify falling in the presence of the Holy Spirit would be when the glory of the Lord would fill the temple and and priests could not even enter to minister, but would fall and could not move. I, too, am Pentecostal, and I will agree with my brother, EdB that there is a lot of the flesh involved here. But I will not say that everything I see is not of the Holy Spirit but of Satan. That to me sounds too much like the Pharisees saying that Jesus and His miracles where of the devil. God can work in whatever way He chooses, and I will not accuse Him if I do not know for certain. I do know that you can go deeper into worship than just mouthing prayers and singing songs and then leaving just as you entered. I know that you can be so focused on the Lord, and desire Him so much that you can feel His presence in a stronger way. When this happens, it is you and Him and nothing else matters. And being in this association, your strength can leave you. I don't agree that it happens everytime someone touches you in prayer, but I know that it can happen even if no one is touching you in prayer. I know of many people who have gone for "altar call" and have never been "slain in the Spirit." Does that mean that the Lord has not touched him? Not at all, but different people react in different ways, and the Lord moves in different ways. I have seen others that are "slain in the spirit" and fall time after time. But I see the change in the one who doesn't fall but walks with the Lord and no change in the other's walk. I think the one very much has "flesh" in the action. Holy laughter? I think that also can be taken to extremes - or a fleshly thing. I know God will not take possesion of a person, that you are in control of your acts (Corinthians)but I have also seen too many churchs where people come in with a glum expression and leave the same way. There is a real problem finding any joy, let alone the joy of the Lord. Any time things are done out of time or place, it has no order. God is a god of order. |
