Romans 13:4 also states, "it does not bear the sword for nothing".. The NIV Study Bible comments on this verse, "'the sword.' The symbol of Roman authority on both the national and the international levels. Here we find the Biblical principle of using force for the maintenance of good order." The NIV Study Bible also comments on Luke 22:36, "'buy one.' An extreme figure of speech used to warn them of the perilous times about to come. They would need defense and protection, as Paul did when he appealed to Caesar (Acts 25:11) as the one who "bears the sword" (Romans 13:4)." |

I want to thank you all for your responses. I do believe in defending ourselves and believe that if someone is trying to do harm, we have the right then for self defense. I would imagine defending one's country would be in the same catagory as defending one's person or family. Then the commandment fabade murder which is not the same thing as accidental killing, killing in self defense, fighting in a war or executing criminals. | ||||||
