1 | A question of capitalization: small "s"? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 6059 | ||
Hi EdB, Thank you very much for answering. I agree that the capitalized S is not all that wrong. I'm looking for a little more consistency, however from our translators. Another place where there is "in the Spirit" is Ezekiel 37:l although NASB has "by the Spirit of the Lord". I haven't decided on that one yet or verse 14 where it says "And I will put My Spirit within you, and you will come to life,..." A note in the Study Bible says that Spirit could be "breath" within you: I'll be comparing it with my possible "breath of Life" at Gen 2:7. Anyway, Ezekiel 36:26,27 show us that both cases could be used correctly, or at least that it is not all "cut and dried," so to speak. Verse 26 says "put a new spirit within you" and verse 26, "And I will put My Spirit within you,..." According to my "Phrase Concordance of the Bible" by Nelson publishers, there are twenty four "IN THE SPIRIT" phrases. What are your thoughts on four more? Mt 22:43, Acts 19:21, 1Peter 4:6, or Acts 21:4 "through the Spirit"? Thanks again. In regard to the Son of Man and who it may be a direct reference to may I suggest the study of Daniel 3:25 in the NASB and the NKJ. Later, Ray |

Ray: Good to see your question. Always good to read your posts and to know you are active in the forum. I would like to submit a thought for your consideration regarding your question: "In regard to the Son of Man and who it may be a direct reference to may I suggest the study of Daniel 3:25 in the NASB and the NKJ." The translators of the Bible, whether through the use of capitalization or the choice of words, ought never to put a meaning into the mouth of a Bible character to suit the translator's own personal bias or belief. Consider the following: Bear in mind that in this verse (Dan 3:25) Nebuchadnezzar is the one speaking. "Nebuchadnezzar was speaking as a pagan polytheist and was content to conceive of the fourth figure as a lesser heavenly being (v.28) sent by the all-powerful God of the Israelites." (Zondervan NASB Study Bible, p. 1232) "The king seemed only to have known that the fourth person was a heavenly being. He called him a son of the gods (a pagan reference to one who appeared supernatural) and an 'Angel' (v. 28)..." (MacArthur Study Bible, p. 1232) Keep up the good work, Ray. Take care. --JVH0212 |

Hi JVH, It is good to hear from you, truly. I appreciate your quote of the MacArthur Study Bible and his capitalization of Angel. I've noticed now that NASB still has verse 28 in lower case with NKJ having Angel also. I haven't gone through Daniel in a long while and I haven't always capitalized angel; it has been and probably will be a difficult decision in the future. But I have kept your words in mind and have made my copy back to "and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods." (I'd even encourage every Tom, Richard, and Harry to consider penciling that in their NKJ). In exchange I'd like you to consider the NKJ capitalization of Daniel 3:29, "inasmuch as there is no other God who is able to deliver in this way." This should be in contrast to Daniel 3:15 "and what god is there who can deliver you out of my hands?" It is the answer for NKJ "who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?" Over and over we read in scripture we read "He is able" or the "One who is able". Amen. If I can throw in a joke. I am reminded of the fishermen telling stories, with one of them ending the time saying, "I'll put the light out of the lantern I snagged if you'll take twenty inches off the fish you caught." But I think we had a good exchange here.(If accepted.) In passing, concerning Daniel, I would capitalize Spirit of the holy God in Daniel 4:9 and wherever it appears. (The NKJ has "Spirit of the Holy God.") I welcome your comments. Thanks. Later, Ray |
