1 | A question of capitalization: small "s"? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 6048
The NASB enters an alternate capitalization occasioning at the bottom of the page. Consider with me the three "in the Spirit" occurances of Rev 1:10, Rev 4:2, and Rev 21:10. How many of you would make this a small "s"? Also, how about Son of Man in Rev. 1:13?

Ray, at first blush I would have to say the first three Rev.1:10, 4:2, 21:10 should be small "s" However knowing the intent is to show that the Holy Spirit is leading or revealing to John’s spirit, I’m not sure the capitalized “s” is all that wrong. In reference to Rev 1:13 it should be capitalized as I believe this is a direct reference to Jesus. NKJV bears this out. |

Hi EdB, Thank you very much for answering. I agree that the capitalized S is not all that wrong. I'm looking for a little more consistency, however from our translators. Another place where there is "in the Spirit" is Ezekiel 37:l although NASB has "by the Spirit of the Lord". I haven't decided on that one yet or verse 14 where it says "And I will put My Spirit within you, and you will come to life,..." A note in the Study Bible says that Spirit could be "breath" within you: I'll be comparing it with my possible "breath of Life" at Gen 2:7. Anyway, Ezekiel 36:26,27 show us that both cases could be used correctly, or at least that it is not all "cut and dried," so to speak. Verse 26 says "put a new spirit within you" and verse 26, "And I will put My Spirit within you,..." According to my "Phrase Concordance of the Bible" by Nelson publishers, there are twenty four "IN THE SPIRIT" phrases. What are your thoughts on four more? Mt 22:43, Acts 19:21, 1Peter 4:6, or Acts 21:4 "through the Spirit"? Thanks again. In regard to the Son of Man and who it may be a direct reference to may I suggest the study of Daniel 3:25 in the NASB and the NKJ. Later, Ray |

4 | A question of capitalization: small "s"? | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 6097
Matthew 22:43 is ify but I think I will go with a capitalized S, showing the Holy Spirit lead David. Acts 19:21 should be a small s showing Paul decided in his spirit or heart to go. Acts 21:4 should be a capital S showing once again the Holy Spirit’s leading. 1 Peter 4:6 again a little ify but I think I will stick with a small s showing man’s spirit. As far as the NASB and Daniel 3:25 I think they have it wrong, both NKJV and KJV use the term Son of God with capitalization. No way I can see it being the “son of the gods” I think the answer is ascertained by Nebuchadnezzar’s reaction. When the three Hebrew children came out of the furnace Nebuchadnezzar never asked who the other person was, he had already proclaimed him the Son of God which could have been Jesus capitalized or or an angel small capitals. In either case Nebuchadnezzar knew whoever it was he came from the God of the three Hebrew children. |

Hi EdB, I'll be interested in what other people might be choosing for I think that these are valid considerations. I agree also with NKJ in the Daniel and the furnace episode. The figure in the furnace appeared like the Son of God and the men put their faith in their God who had sent His angel. I left out one "in the Spirit" phrases from Revelation. I would put the three that we have considered in lower case along with Rev 4:2. For consistency I would also put Matthew 22:43 as "Then how does David in the spirit call Him Lord,"... But if you know me at all you know that I would capitalize the three words of "Son" in that passage. In Acts 21:4, I chose the small "s" when I compared it with Acts 20:22,23 "And now, bound in spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem,..." And just the fact that the will of the Lord, Acts 21:14, was to be done and Paul did go to Jerusalem (and to Rome), shows that it wasn't the Spirit telling Paul through them. Again, thank you EdB. I'm glad for the discussion if only to reinforce the truth that Jesus is the Son of God and the Son of Man. |
