1 | Possible Lockman Forum Improvement #1? | Bible general Archive 1 | Makarios | 18488 | ||
Greetings Sir Pent! As for deleting posts, I do agree that this will assist in searching through the ever growing number of posts, but we will never be able to do this.. There will always be someone who wants to ask "Are we predestined?" or "Who was Cain's wife?" or "Is baptism necessary for salvation?" or a myriad other subjects WITHOUT checking first to see if the subject has already been discussed. This was the reason why I did not post for about three weeks. :) I needed a break from this monotony. And there will always be a hundred answers, for and against, just rehashing what has already been rehashed too many times to count.. I feel that this idea is an interesting one, but we could never "filter" or stop the 'repeat' of the same questions over and over without the presence of a Forum Moderator. So, my friend, I guess my answer would be "No". Nolan |

Charis, Hank, Kalos, and Nolan, I appreciate all of your answers with regard to this suggestion of deleting duplicate posts. It seems that all four of you voted "no" not because you are against the idea, but just because it would be too difficult. I understand your concern, but would you mind revoting based purely on the idea itself. Of course if it is not possible for Lockman to do this, I'm sure we would all understand. But I think that it would be helpful to at least have an accurate view of what the ideal desires of the forum members are. Also, I have a few ideas that might make it possible to accomplish without too much work. For old posts, they could probably just do a search for the word "search". This would pull up all the threads where someone asked a question that had already been asked and someone else responded by telling them to use the search box. For future posts, we could start using some sort of standardized comment like "this thread is a duplicate" to draw Lockman's attention to any threads that needed to be deleted. This would still be a time consuming task, because there could be some new material in responses to the duplicate question that would need to be added to the original post on that subject. However, I don't think that it would be impossible. In any case, I just would like a little clarification if you are all against the idea in general. Thanks again for all your help in making this a terriffic forum. |

Dear Sir, Greetings, my friend, in Jesus' name! I am not so conservative as to be against improvement :-) But for Lockman to provide a full-time (human) moderator, editor, and-or censor is a big expense. A software solution is very difficult, in fact nearly impossible. ( I am a certified PC technician, I have looked into it thoroughly ) Someone would lose a legitimate post, and we would have a problem. So a fleshware or software solution to deleting-combining threads is not a real option. (IMHO) As to coming up with a 'rulebook' for self-policing action, this is also very difficult to enforce. Surely, some of us might be 'disciplined' enough to adhere to a plan that we decide upon. But at what cost? This forum would become 'work,' and posssibly 'dead works.' I enjoy the fellowship here, and try to be lucid, balanced and consistent. I think that we could organize ourselves to the point that it is no longer enjoyable. Another point is that very few 'others' would want to pay attention to a 'spartan' forum. :-) Impossible? Maybe not. Impractical? Proabably. The Lockman staff is already actively censoring offensive threads, but to ask them to edit constantly is a bit petty. I am not as worried about duplicates as I am about a plethora of similar questions and comments that have no practical application in our present walk with Jesus. But....this IS a public, free forum. :-) In Christ Jesus, charis |
