Greetings Forum! There was a thread recently which dealt with Eternal Security. The position of most on the forum seemed to be that the relationship between a believer and Christ can never be severed. If that is the case, how do we explain these three passages in particular? 1) 1 Cor. 15:1 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 2) Col. 1:21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant. 3) 2 Peter 1:10 Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I realize that many of us will approach these passage from different theological perspectives. My point here is not to argue the passages. I would simply like to hear how some from different perspectives deal with these passages. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

One passage: 1 Cor 15:1-2 1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. (KJV) Paul wrote a long letter to the church at Corinth. He spoke about many different things. At the end, he reminds them of the Gospel. If he had not done this, they would fallen into a doctrine of good works. The church would have become very religious and very DEAD as they have today. He tells them to stand on the Gospel and that is "Jesus Christ, and him crucified" (1 Cor. 2:2). If you can't, then maybe you didn't get saved as you thought....."unless you have believed in vain" (vs. 2). |

Greetings Doug619! Thanks for the response! The only problem I would see with this exgesis would be that v. 2 says, "by this gospel you are being saved, if you hold fast to the words I preached to you." Thus, the people in v. 2 are described as those who are being saved, not just as people who thought they were being saved. However, there is a condition attached, "...if you hold fast to the words I preached to you." Any thoughts? Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

1 Cor 15:2 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. (KJV) It says "you are saved" not "you are being saved". Where he says "keep in memory", the Greek word here is : 2722 katecho (kat-ekh'-o); from 2596 and 2192; to hold down (fast), in various applications (literally or figuratively): KJV-- have, hold (fast), keep (in memory), let, X make toward, possess, retain, seize on, stay, take, withhold. The word I would use here is "possess". I believe Paul was possibly saying "You are saved if you possess the word that I preached to you unless you didn't get saved". He was not talking about "becoming saved" or "becoming more saved". If you are saved, then the Gospel is impossible to forget. As a child, my mom and dad made me go to church. Every Sunday, the preacher would always mention "Jesus Christ and him crucified" in some way or other. I didn't understand it. My thought was " So what? What does that have to do with me?". Then one day, Jesus spoke to my heart and told me I was lost. I walked the aisle that day and gave my heart to Jesus. When I stood before the church, the preacher asked me if I had anything to say. My mind said no, but my heart said "Jesus died on the cross for my sins and on the third day he rose again". If you have the word in your heart (Jesus died on the cross for my sins and on the third day he rose again) then this is evidence of your salvation. I believe this is the point Paul was trying to make. |

Greetings Doug! Great testimony! I love hearing about people coming to Christ. If you don't mind me asking, how old were you? I'm sorry I did not clarify my point about "being saved". The word is a Present, Passive, Indicative, 2nd, Plural verb. Which simply means, it can be translated as "You are being saved". As I pointed out to Bill, I'm not sure if there is any particular relevance to the present tense here as oppossed to an aorist. However, my main point was that the people in v. 1 are described as those who are or are being saved. This would not fit an unbeliever. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

The words that Paul spoke of here (the Gospel) don't mean much to this world today. They didn't mean much to me either when I was growing up. I was raised up in the church (Southern Baptist). It didn't do much for me, though. The preacher always preached the same message....."Jesus Christ and him crucified". I thought "So what??". One day, when I was 16 years old, I was standing at the back of the church. The preacher gave the invitation after that same old message. At that time, the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart and told me I was lost. I said " I know". He said "What are you going to do about it?".The only thing I could think of was to go and ask the preacher. He said "You need to pray the sinner's prayer". When I prayed, I felt like I had started a new life. Guess what!!!........I DID!!!!!!! 2 Cor 5:17 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (KJV) Yours in Christ, Doug |
