1 | How to love others as commanded | 1 John 3:11 | jr8 | 108854 | ||
Being a believer for years. I have recently began a SERIOUS effort to study the bible and follow God. I have repented of sins and believe God is the only way to eternal life. I now know he requires us to love and serve others. How does a selfish man, of 40 years, learn to give of himself? And love total strangers. Is this a working process or should that automatcally be in my heart now that I am a follower. It is hard to change a 40 years of ways all at once. Though I believe God can do it. But like a growing child, is there a learning stage we go threw with this. May God Bless and thanks |

Greetings jr8 I personally believe that the process of learning to love varies depending upon individual circumstances. But nevertheless it is both instantaneous and ongoing. One thing that can speed up the process depends on how much you individually have been forgiven. I state that for no other reason, other than what is stated in the following text of God's word: Luke 7:41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. Luke 7:42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? Luke 7:43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. Luke 7:44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. Luke 7:45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. Luke 7:46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. Luke 7:47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. Also concerning how to love, one of the saints of old, made the following comment on this verse; Matt. 5:44 But I (Jesus) say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; "The person who wants to fulfil this command must LEARN the right way to love his enemy. Very simply, you must LEARN not to be upset over an injury because it is an offense to you. Rather, out of your love for God, TRAIN your thoughts on the harm your enemy is doing to his own soul with each sin or offense he commits." Blessings New Creature |
