Church attendance is good as it is the time we come together to praise and have fellowship with God. And also with each other in Christ. From the very beginning of the church at Pentecost the believers came together (Act 2:42), to pray and to praise God and to fellowship with God and with each other, it is a good thing. Now not every church is right for every person, you have to go where you feel led to by God, and finding that place may take some time; however, it is worth all the time and energy and effort one expends to find a good church home. I do not go because I have to go. I go because I want to go. Otherwise I would not go! |

Dear Teddy, You said "I do not go because I have to go. I go because I want to go. Otherwise I would not go!" Let me reply by quoting (by whom I cannot remember) - "Some things are commanded because they are RIGHT, and some thing are right because they are COMMANDED." What "we" want to do or don't want to do does not fall into the equation. :-) Cheri |

I stand by exactly what I said. I do not go to church because I have to go to church, I go because I want to go to church, because I know that it is good for me. You can beat someone over the head with the word and guilt them into going; but if they are not there because they want to be there, they probably will not get much from it, and they probably will not continue to attend in the future. People who do not want to attend will not do so for the long term out of fear or force, that has not and does not work, they have to do so out of love; out of a sincere desire to be there. So what we want does fall into the equation; as, we should be in church not out of mandate but out of a sincere desire to be there. And if we do not want to be there, and we are looking for excuses not to be there, then that shows that we have a very serious problem of the heart. So lets look at the commandment for a moment, and see if we are commanded to be at church, because you seem to think so. "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." Exodus 20:7-11 KJV It seems to be a mandate to rest, not a mandate to attend services, as is clearly understood by reading the text itself. Attending services and having fellowship with each other is something we do out of a sincere desire and love and not out of commandment. |

Hi Teddy, You're absolutely right about the Sabbath and the keeping of it holy. (I am a Sabbath observer.) I was actually referring to the statement in Heb 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. Is that not a command? (I'm asking seriously.) I know it doesn't mean that you are to be with your group/church EVERY time they get together - life happens sometimes to keep you away. But isn't that a command not to try to stand alone? Still learning :-) (and making mistakes!!) Cheri |
