The name of this web site is StudyBibleForum.com and its sponsors, the Lockman Foundation, have laid down clear guidelines for users. The first item listed for compliance to its guidelines , to which every poster agrees with every post he makes, reads as follows: "This post is biblically based and whenever possible, I have included Bible references to support it." ...... But have you noticed how frequently this guideline is agreed to but not followed at all? How many times have you seen posts that have absolutely no biblical references, but instead are riddled with a generous number of expressions such as "I think," "I believe," -- without giving the slightest biblical reference that supports the "I thinks" and "I believes." Personally, I don't read very much of the output from users who express opinions without scriptural back-up. Why should I, why should you, waste your time reading raw opinions by users when you haven't the vaguest notion of what their credentials are? You don't really know whether you're reading an informed opinion or the opinion of an air head. Seldom on this Forum is a user called into account for entering post after post of sheer opinion unsupported by any scriptural references, yet this practice is a clear violation of Forum rules and constitutes abuse. When another Forum user is unfairly attacked, all rise to his defense. But when the Bible is ignored and replaced by opinion, few rise to the Bible's defense. What kind of selective double standard are we following on this Forum? Do you consider it a problem? Does it concern you? What do you propose to do about it? The obvious place to begin is by cleaning up our own act first -- to be heavy on Scriptural references and light on purely personal opinion and speculation. And each of us can crack down hard on the abusers, on those who day after day use this Forum as a soap-box for their opinions and ignore its purpose, which is Bible study. We should warn recalcitrant offenders on-line first and, should they choose to ignore us, we should file a abuse reports with the Lockman Foundation. Have you noticed that the most outrageous and unbiblical opinions seem to get the most attention on this Forum? So often when a user posts a thoroughly biblical response, it attracts little attention, if any at all. Do we have have a case of itching ears (2 Timothy 4:3) instead of a thirst for God's word (2 Timothy 2:15)? --Hank

Hank, Very good reminder, I do hope I am not guilty with that, In my own little way, I tried to put scriptures in all of my positions and argument. Here in the Philippines in our church that is the decipline, if we have any discussion we tried to encourage everyone to quote the books, chapters and verse of the back up passages. Charis in one of his posts has very good reminder regarding the Forum guidelines charis, mentioned about descipline in everything, passages of the Bible, spelling, grammar etc. Although I am guilty about grammar, (as you know english is not my first language)I commend charis for posting that as descipline. I know my grammar is not good but I tried to participate to share and try to answer some questions ( I hope they understand) One thing I am sure there is passages back up in all of my argument. I hope many (if not all) will have chance to read that post of yours, as a reminder to everyone before engaging to any discussion. Why we have to rely on opinions and conclusions? Isa 34:16 Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them. Ga 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 2Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: God bless, |

Thank you, Johnny, my friend of the Phillippines. I appreciate that English is not your mother tongue and applaud your spirit and tenacity in sticking with this Forum for so long a time in spite of the language handicap. Please take solace that most of us whose native tongue IS English also struggle to manage the English and get it to say what we want to say. A few minutes spent sampling the daily wares of the Forum will convince you that some of us fail! Oh, incidentally, I can see that your ability to write standard English as improved a great deal since we met on this Forum some three years ago. Keep trucking! ..... Back to the topic of supporting posts with references from God's word. It makes no sense to call this a StudyBibleForum and permit post after post from any user who refuses to back up anything he says with Scripture. To do so is against the rules that the Lockman Foundation has laid down. I firmly believe that users who post nothing but their own opinions day after day should not be allowed continued access to do so. Anyone on this Bible forum who thinks his words are more important than God's should move on to a web site that doesn't care one way or the other what is posted on it. Johnny, I know that you believe with all your heart, along with me, the words of Hebrews 4:12: "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edge sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." My words don't hold a candle to God's words, and neither do the words of the personal opinion pushers on this Forum who resist the rules of providing exact quotations from Scripture to back up their musings. Why don't we call them to task to support their views with Scripture or stop posting until they are willing to comply with Forum guidelines? Good to hear from you, Johnny. May God bless. --Hank

Hank, Thank you too, and I hope members of this forum will obey the rules, if we cannot obey the simple rules, what else can we observe? God bless, |
