This topic has been debated before ... Look at the threads for this verse and Titus 1:6, and the verses after. There are at least four views 1. Must be married and never divorced 2. Must be married, could be divorced, Bibically could be divorced, Bibically 3. May be single, could be divorced, Bibically 4. May benever married Elder, in the Greek, is presbuteros (Strong's 4245) 1Ti 5:19, 1Pe 5:1, 2Jo 1:1, 3Jo 1:1. Episkopos (Strong's 1985) is the word for overseer. Some interchange these words, but they are different. |

Sorry, I am still learning the site and did not see the other threads until after I posted. These other posts did not really help me find the answer. This is such an important issue that there has to be an answer in the Bible somewhere. The health of a church is at stake here. I have read around 8 commentaries split pretty evenly on the subject. I do not desire to start a debate, I just was looking for some direction to find the answer. Thanks, Rocky |

Scripture ... 1 Tim 3:1-13; Tit 1:5-16 ... Rocky, As you have seen, even the experts do not agree ... some even focus on this one issue, forgetting he rest of the list. The health of all churches are at stake. I think we deviate from the truth and rely on tradition or trends ... not just on this issue. PRAYER is key ... each one needs to devote much time in prayer. Try to wash away what others have said and listen to God. The church leaders have a higher level of resposibilty, accountablity and authority. They are examples ... not just to the congregates, but those outside. My thoughts are we may want to keep a elder. pastor. overseer, deacon ... because they are popular, preach well or some other reason. I have seen pastors refuse to step down, when they should have. It ruined many lives. I have seen a deacon (and AWANA commander) step down. I admire this man. I think the elder needs to think of the consequences of his remaining. My heart is telling me that he needs to move on, away from the church and ministry anywhere, forever. While he is forgiven, consequences remain. Steve email Searcher78@aol.com |
