1 | Partly under the Law? | Col 2:14 | DocTrinsograce | 146244 | ||
Hi, Mark... I think you've made some good observations. I like what Samuel Bolton said so long ago, "The law, as it is considered as a rule, can no more be abolished or changed than the nature of good and evil can be abolished and changed. The substance of the law is the sum of doctrine concerning piety towards God, charity towards our neighbours, temperance and sobriety towards ourselves. And for the substance of it, it is moral and eternal, and cannot be abrogated. We grant that the circumstances under which the moral law was originally given were temporary and changeable, and we have now nothing to do with the promulgator, Moses, nor with the place where it was given, Mount Sinai, nor with the time when it was given, fifty days after the people came out of Egypt, nor yet as it was written in tables of stone, delivered with thunderings and lightnings. We look not to Sinai, the hill of bondage, but to Zion, the mountain of grace. We take the law as the image of the will of God which we desire to obey, but from which we do not expect life and favour, neither do we fear death and rigour. This, I conceive, is the concurrent opinion of all divines. For believers, the law is abrogated in respect of its power to justify or condemn; but it remains full of force to direct us in our lives. It condemns sin in the faithful, though it cannot condemn the faithful for sin. Says Zanchius: 'The observance of the law is necessary for a Christian man, and it is not possible to separate such observance from faith.' And as Calvin says: 'Let us put far from us the ungodly notion that the law is not to be our rule, for it is our changeless rule of life.' The moral law, by its teaching, admonishing, chiding, and reproving, prepares us for every good work. The law is void in respect of its power to condemn us, but it still has power to direct us; we are not under its curse, but yet under its commands." You might want to read Bolton's entire discussion of the issue -- which deals in great detail with this question. You can find it at http://www.the-highway.com/articleFeb00.html Sorry, but you know how I love these old preachers! One more quote, okay? :-) "Saints of God, keep the eye of your faith intently and immoveably fixed upon Christ, your sole pattern. Our Lord did not keep that law that His people might be lawless. He did not honour that law that they might dishonour its precepts. His obedience provided no licence for our disobedience. His fulfilment releases us not from the obligation -— the sweet and pleasant, yet solemn obligation -— to holiness of life. Our faith does not make void the law, but rather establishes the law. The 'righteousness of the law is fulfilled in us' when we 'walk after the Spirit,' in lowly conformity to Christ’s example. Was He meek and lowly in heart? Did He bless when cursed? Did He, when reviled, revile not again? Did He walk in secret with God? Did He always seek to do those things which pleased His Father? Did He live a life of faith, and prayer, and toil? So let us imitate Him, that of us it may be said, 'These are they who follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth.'" --Octavius Winslow In Him, Doc |

Mark: Only laws that were abolished were the sacrificial laws and surrounding laws which pointed to Christ. Blood of animals cannot take away sin. Ten commandments are universal moral laws which I believe God had in existence from creation. Gen. 26:5 clearly tell us that Abraham was following law. God's law to not eat tree in garden of Eden was not apart of 10 Comm. but also the diet restrictions on meat is not in the 10 comm. This is a tough topic to discuss but I would rather take the approach that we are bound by what God says on any subject unless there is specific statements or instructions be God to challenge His prior instructions. Diet laws have not changed. Sabbath (Saturday) has not changed. To justify a doctine wihtout biblical evidence (properly interpreted) is blatent disobedience. A reflection of out love is to keep His will or commandments. In love, Merv |

Hi Merv, If these things which you say are true, why didn't the apostles (Acts 15) tell the church that they needed to keep all the law, but instead, said to keep from idol, fornication, things strangled, and blood. Nothing about the Sabbath, or clean and unclean animals, and in fact Jesus "declared all foods clean" as has been covered in other threads. And again, we are not speaking of the abolishing of the Law. Our "keeping" the Law (which of course we cannot do!) does not bring us righteousness, because we cannot fully keep it (James 2:10). Jesus kept, or obeyed, the entire Law on our behalf, thus fulfilling it (demonstrating the intent and purpose, enacting the motivation and behavior, living the essence of the Law), then imputing (counting as our own) the righteousness of His holy life to us, when we believe in Him. We do not add anything by any "act of obedience" to the Law to the righteousness we receive from Jesus. We do not take anything away from the righteousness we receive from Jesus when we do not do the works of the Law. The just shall live by faith. Gal 3:10 "For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them." 1 Cor 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 1 Cor 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. How could Paul have made these statements? All things - eating pork, working on the sabbath, and so on? All things are lawful for me! One last point. When we say we keep God's Law because we love Him, do we mean that our love for God gives us the ability to keep His Law? Rather because God's Spirit lives in us (Rom 8:8-9), He has made us into a new creature, with His law "written on our hearts", you could say His Law is our "spiritual DNA", and now "we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works." Mark: Jerusalem council only dealt with the controversial issues of gentiles coming out of idol worship and their dietary customs. Malachi 3:6 He gave us law to point out our sin. 1 John 2:4, Rom. 7:12, 14 Through Christ we can do all things. God expects us to be obedient out of love. In the OT even the sacrifices could not take away their sins. Actually, once a year they were again reminded of there sins for the whole year. They could not forget their sin because the Saviour had not yet come and died. But their faith in God and obedience to atone for their sin with symbolic sacrifices pointed them to Christ. I do not think anyone with the right heart could slay a little lamb and not feel the pain of their sins which was put onto the lamb. Jesus's shed blood took away forever the guilt of sin as long as we repent of it. After repenting the Holy Spirit will give us the power to sin no more. But we still need to guide (law) to keep us from slipping off the path to God. Noah found grace in the eyes of God but if he was not obedient to build the ark - would he still have been saved by God ??????? Faith requires action (Faith without works is dead !!) We as a Christian community have been beaten down with false doctrine. (Sabbath, diet, prophecy, hell ..) I challege you !!! (Math. 15:3) |

Merv, Ac 15:5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses. 6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter. The council at Jerusalem met to consider "circumcision (the beginning of keeping the Law) and the Law of Moses" - the Law of Moses is inclusive - all the Law of Moses. These, and other things which you have been disputing, are clear writtings of scripture, and you can listen to them or not, however, I am not interested in endless debate, so I wish you well. Ro 14:1 ¶ Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. 2 For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. 3 Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. 4 Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. 5 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. 6 He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. 7 For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. 8 For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's. 1Co 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 1Co 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. |
