However, "sabbaton" is used twice in this passage to refer to "in the end of.." and "to the first of.." This use of the word "sabbaton" twice is repeated in Mark 16:1-2 and Luke 24:1. This makes it more likely that the original authors meant "sabbaton" to mean "Sabbath" twice. | ||||||

Hello sandrider Let's look at it again. "And on the eve of the sabbaths, at the dawn, toward the first of the sabbaths, came Mary the Magdalene, and the other Mary, to see the sepulchre..." Saying that the 2nd mention of sabbath refers to a 2nd sabbath would only make sense if it was a high sabbath that came during the Jewish calendar. However, none is found after the passover is slain. Therefore, the 2nd mention must be simply the beginning of the week. Steve |

Greetings Steve! Excellent point my friend! However, the way the text currently reads would not allow that meaning simply because 'sabbaton' with a number always refers to a day of the week. If a special sabbath was in mind the text would have to say something like: "After the sabbath, on the sabbath....". Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
