Referg: Perhaps I was being rude and, if so, then I did not have the right attitude. (Please note: the following are general remarks and are not intended to accuse anyone in particular of anything. I am merely discussing inappropriate and irritating practices that have been going on since the beginning of this forum.) Every man has a right to his *opinion*, but no man has the right to be wrong in his *facts*. Every man has a right to an opinion, but I do not come to the Forum either to look for or to post questions and comments unsubstantiated by Scripture. When giving an opinion people need to come right out and label it as their opinion, not as Bible doctrine. Nor do I come here to waste time on those postings that shed no light on the subject. When people build a doctrine based on one word or one punctuation mark in one sentence, I'm just not interested. Moreover, any doctrine that depends upon or can only be proven by the wording of one Bible translation is not much of a doctrine. The ideal Forum would be one in which people for the most part limited their postings to Bible questions that can be addressed with Bible answers. I don't care for all the arrogance, arguing, quibbling, hairsplitting over every jot and tittle, everyone calling everyone else everything from heretic to apostate, etc. I usually don't take the time to read the hypothetical, philosophical, speculative debates that go on and on with insufficient Scripture to support what the authors assert. What I really don't need is to read debates over denominational issues or questions that have already been debated to death -- for example, is baptism necessary for salvation? Continuing to ask the same question that has been duly answered is belligerence. The type of questions that I feel are INappropiate to this Forum are those that want an explanation for WHY God did this or that. Is God fair? Does this passage really mean what it says? Also inappropriate are questions that clearly ask for a speculative answer, i.e. ones where everybody knows the Scripture is silent on the subject. WHEN THE BIBLE IS SILENT on a subject or question, I prefer to remain silent. (See Deut 29:29.) Finally, we really don't need people who come here pretending to ask sincere questions but in reality have already made up their minds and have their own agenda -- i.e., to propogate cultic or heretical doctrine. Every man has a right to his *opinion*, but no man has the right to be wrong in his *facts*. |

Every man has a right to his *opinion*, but no man has the right to be wrong in his *facts*. Additional thoughts on this subject. Not being wrong in one's facts requires a little EFFORT on the part of the individual. Ascertaining the facts will not come by osmosis, asking the guy at the next desk or on the assembly line, reading the Reader's Digest Condensed Bible, voodoo exegesis, daydreaming or any such way. It will come as the result of a diligent search of the scriptures mingled with much prayer. It will come from the scriptures, using sound principles of interpretation and with the aid of such resources as are available, including, but not limited to: an English dictionary, a good Bible dictionary, a concordance, perhaps one or more Greek word studies, and reference works on the archaeology, language, history and culture of the times. Also, if one cannot even define the terms used in the questions and answers, then one is not quite ready to debate the scriptures. |
