The filling with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18) is a repeated reality in the life of the believer. ------------- Mike7: Let me begin by saying there are three things to keep in mind here: 1) My main point is: There is ONE baptism, but MANY fillings. 2) Because the Bible itself makes a distinction between "baptized by the Holy Spirit" and "filled with the Holy Spirit", we too must make a distinction between the two terms. Baptized and filled do not both mean the same thing. Filled is not just another way of saying baptized. 3) We don't prove the Bible by experience. Instead, we prove experience by the Bible. 1 Cor 12:13 NASB For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. The Bible in 1 Cor 12:13 says: "By one Spirit we were all baptized." Notice that this verse, in contrast with Acts 2:4, DOES use both Spirit and baptized in one sentence. This is how we were initially placed into the body of Christ. It ocurred to each of us ONCE -- when we received Christ as Savior and were born again. Also note that in Acts 2:4, the text there does not say: "And they were all baptized with the Holy Spirit." It uses the word "filled". "And they were all FILLED (emphasis mine) with the Holy Spirit." Filled, not baptized. Not according to the plain text of the Scripture. (Please don't misunderstand me. I have not taken a stand for or against the gift of tongues. So far I have not said one thing about tongues. What I am talking about is the difference between "baptized" and "filled.") So, each individual believer is *baptized* by the Holy Spirit (placed into the body of Christ) ONCE, when he is born again and first becomes a Christian. However, the *filling* with the Spirit is a repeated reality in the life of the believer. I.e., there is ONE BAPTISM, BUT MANY FILLINGS. The fullness of the Spirit affects all areas of life, not just speaking boldly. Also note the Bible teaches that ALL believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:9). Grace to you, kalos |

Hi Mike7, Christ in you, the hope of glory: Colossians 1:28, "and we proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, that we may present every man complete in Christ. And for this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me." We are complete in Christ, we walk in Him, and He has made us alive together in Him, having forgiven us all our transgression. This came about because of the removal of the flesh by the circumsion of Christ. This is a spiritual circumcision and baptism spoken of here in Colossians 2:11,12. When we are complete in Christ we desire to serve Him for He is now our Lord and Master as well as our friend and brother. Now we desire for spiritual wisdom and guidance so we look more and more to God's word, the Bible, always looking to the Teacher and the Spirit of truth. In order to walk with Him we must continually be fed with His word. We must be filled with holy spirit. 1 Corinthians 2:9, NKJ, "For it is written: 'Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.' But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God." So I view God as the Giver and the holy spirit as the gift given, even the deep things of God. We receive the spirit from God and the things are spiritually discerned; nothing comes from us as natural men. 1 Corinthians 2:16, NKJ, "For 'who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?' But we have the mind of Christ." I have stated this belief about the "holy spirit" in the past and have not gotten much response; but I offer it for your consideration. 1 Corinthians 2:12, my penciled-in copy for what it is worth, "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the *spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." Note the "receiving the spirit" of verses 12 and 14 in the NKJ. Note the contrast between us as believers and the natural man. I also believe that God gives the spirit without measure. See John 3:34. The words of God are a gift to us all. From the heart, Ray |
