1 | Storing Up Treasure | Eph 2:1 | dkorwood | 105707
Can a person who is UNSAVED store up treasure in heaven? I am wondering if only works done for God AFTER WE ARE SAVED result in treasure in heaven? Do the good works of a non-christian store up and then are creditable to them when/if they get saved? I am looking for scriptural reference to support answer. Logically, it wouldn't do an UNSaved person any eternal good to store up treasure because it won't lessen their condemnation in hell. But, a person might have done tons of "good" deeds BEFORE they were saved. I am wondering if our heart was not toward God then maybe the treasure isn't stored in heaven until we are saved? And, do UNSAVED people receive their "reward" while on earth only? For instance, does Proverbs 19:17, mean that the unsaved will be repayed by the Lord while on earth? I mean lots of people have pity on the poor especially at the Christmas time... I am figuring a shack (figuratively)in heaven is better than anything I can imagine...but, I am interested in pleasing Jesus and storing treasure in heaven. I am saved. Thanks |

2 | Storing Up Treasure | Eph 2:1 | Makarios | 105708
Greetings DKorwood, An unsaved person is dead in their trespasses and sins. There are no redeeming qualities in those who are not saved. Can a person who is unsaved store up treasure in heaven, you ask? Absolutely not! There is absolutely no access to heaven that is granted to a person who is not saved. Only after we are saved can we store up treasure in heaven, for the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field (Matt. 13:44), and every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a head of a household, who brings out of his treasure things new and old. (Matt. 13:52) Following Jesus is a prerequisite for being a disciple (John 21:22), and we only have treasure in heaven if we do the will of God or give up that which is held dearest to us for the sake of Christ (Matt. 19:21; Mark 10:21; Luke 12:33; 18:22). Therefore, only disciples of Christ can store up treasure in heaven, since it is for the sake of Christ in which they store up treasure. And only a disciple of Christ will have access to this treasure in heaven, since no unsaved person will inherit the kingdom of heaven (1 Cor. 6:9). Blessings to you, Makarios |

Hi, Makarios; You said "There are no redeeming qualities in those who are not saved." I must disagree - not to pick on you, my friend, but because I have heard Christians say this and it has always troubled me. First, I assume you didn't mean "redeeming" in its narrow theological sense. There are no redeeming qualities because, as you know, it is Jesus who redeems, not any qualities of our own. So I asume you meant the word in its more common sense of "virtuous" or "worthwhile". I think this comment is contrary to both the Bible and everyday experience. Saved or not, we are all created in God's image. I don't believe that sin has the power to completely obliterate every hint of God's qualities within even the most reprobate member of God's creation. (As a Presbyterian, I hope I'm not sending Calvin spinning in his grave.) For example, there are several instances in Acts of Gentiles worshipping God before they were saved (Cornelius, Lydia, Titius Justus). Surely they exhibited some virtuous or worthwhile qualities. I seldom rely on extra-Biblical sources, but I agree with C. S. Lewis that in a quarrel, even the most hardened atheist will appeal to an innate sense of fair play - a concept of right and wrong that is part of our nature imparted by God. My own experience confirms this. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

Greetings Indy! (as I start my John Rhys-Davies impersonation) Actually, I was referring to the "narrow theological sense" of the word 'redeeming' when I said that an unsaved person has no redeeming qualities. But as for the "virtuous" or "worthwhile" sense, there are some people that you run into that you wouldn't believe it if they told you that they were not Christians, and others who you wouldn't believe were Christians even if they told that they were. :-) However, if you don't know Christ, then it doesn't matter how many times you are caught smiling on camera: a person who doesn't know Christ as Savior is a lost person, and will not see heaven. Blessings to you my friend, Makarios |
