WARNING - This is a long one. :o) My girlfreind is LDS and we have talked about the book of mormon on several occassions. When we discuss inconsistancies when compared to the bible, she says that although she loves her religion deeply, she cannot answer my questions. I am not trying to argue with her, but I do have some questions and comments. The first is this... in GAL 5:7 it says "...some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ." and in GAL 5:8 it says "...even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!" Here are my questions... The book of mormom preaches in it introduction two things that causes me distress: 1) Joseph Smith relates that the angel Moroni came to him several times in a dream (in one night) and passed on information concerning the gold plates to him. Moroni is the earthly son of a man named Mormom (after which the religion is named after) and after he died, became an angel of God; and 2) Joseph Smith (in the introducation) also relates that the book of mormon is the most correct of any book on earth and that man would get nearer to God by abiding to it rather than any other book. These two things cause me to reject the book of mormon almost immediately. The fact that a man dies and becomes and angel and that the book of mormon is the only book that will get you close to God (over the bible even). Am I alone in seeing this or am I being over reactive or misreading the information in some way? I would appreciate any responses. |

While the Bible is the Standard for Salvation, it is not common to discard inspirational literature. As a LDS she is required to accept the BOM as the word of God, you are not. Yet would it offend God for you to respect the truths which are found in it's pages? The Book Of Mormon relates many moral lessons to the reader. To reject uplifting and supporting words as those in this book would sinful in my opinion. My advice would be to take what will benefit you in your walk with God and leave the rest. There are many paths, many roads to Christ. The road of service, the path of reflection, the road of knowledge, the journey of contemplation; they all lead to the Christ conciousness which brings peace. Many in this forum would have you be seperate from others saying Bible,Bible! it is the only way. I would ask you to consider one thing before you heed those voices with a spirit of contention. Before this Bible came to be as it is today(1500's), do you suppose all who believed were condemned. I would say no, that the true test of truth is not the words of any book but rather the spirit behind the truth. The Book Of Mormon has changed lives, healed families, brought hope to over 14 million people...Is that the spirit of Christ?...Yes it is Blessed Be, Chochma Kodesh |

Inspirational not the same as inspired. For all matters of faith and practice evangelical Christians are concerned with the Bible, which is God's only inspired revelation to man. God's complete revelation to man is the 66 books of which the Bible consists. We have no need or desire to consult books of spurious origin, books of mythology or idolatry to determine God's truth. Rather we turn to Scripture only. We don't go scavenging among garbage cans looking for a scrap of food when God has prepared for us a feast in His Word -- the Bible. The Book of Mormon is not the inspired Word of God -- period. |

Nice comeback, Mr. Chochma. Very slick! Too bad you won't be around to post any more slick comebacks. | ||||||
