1 | Understand Hagar and Sarah illustration? | Gal 4:21 | Searcher56 | 77416
Scripture ... Gal 4:24 "This is allegorically speaking, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children who are to be slaves; she is Hagar." My brother Tim, God's day to you. The 'covenant of Mt. Sinai' is one made to Hagar, unless I misread the text. It would be confusing to think that the child from Sarah would be an allegory of the child from Hagar ... was Israel considered slaves (Hagarites) until ... Jerusalem, and then were free? Free from what? It says Jerusalem and since He OUTSIDE of Jerusalem ... so I don't follow. Searcher |

2 | Understand Hagar and Sarah illustration? | Gal 4:21 | Morant61 | 77421
Greetings Searcher! My understanding is that Hagar represents the Covenant of Law and that Sara represents the Covenant of Grace or promise. Paul himself says that he is speaking figuratively, so I don't think we can get hung up on the fact that the Law was actually given through Sara's children! :-) Hagar represents those who are trying to earn salvation through the Law, while Sara represents those who receive as the fulfillment of a promise. Those who follow the Law are slaves, those who follow the promise are free. This is definitely a good example of way only inspired writers should use allegory! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
