1 | Understand Hagar and Sarah illustration? | Gal 4:21 | greatfullydead | 77362
Can someone please help me to understand the illustration made here? Hagar and Sarah are used to illustrate people under the law and people who are free in christ, but I don't totally get it.
2 | Understand Hagar and Sarah illustration? | Gal 4:21 | Searcher56 | 77366
Scripture ... Gal 4:22-26 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman. 23 But the son by the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise. 4:24 This is allegorically speaking, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children who are to be slaves; she is Hagar. 25 Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free; she is our mother. greatfullydead, God's day to you ... I side with you on this. On my search engine I entered, "Hagar and Sarah " "Galatians 4" ... and received 423 results. But, I have a problem with what most people say. However, I do not see Law after verse 21. I do see it in verses 4-5, where Christ was born under the Law, to redeem those who were under the Law. Was the Law given to Sarah's descendents or Hagar's? I believe they have a problem. I see Hagar as bondage (slavery) and flesh ... Sarah as freedom and promise. There is no place in this chapter that says we are no longer under the Law. Romans 6:14-15 only says "under Law" without the article "the". I see a very important point. Searcher |

Greetings Searcher! You wrote: "However, I do not see Law after verse 21." My friend, to what then do you feel Gal. 4:24 is referring when it mentions the 'covenant of Mt. Sinai'? Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Scripture ... Gal 4:24 "This is allegorically speaking, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children who are to be slaves; she is Hagar." My brother Tim, God's day to you. The 'covenant of Mt. Sinai' is one made to Hagar, unless I misread the text. It would be confusing to think that the child from Sarah would be an allegory of the child from Hagar ... was Israel considered slaves (Hagarites) until ... Jerusalem, and then were free? Free from what? It says Jerusalem and since He OUTSIDE of Jerusalem ... so I don't follow. Searcher |

5 | Understand Hagar and Sarah illustration? | Gal 4:21 | Morant61 | 77421
Greetings Searcher! My understanding is that Hagar represents the Covenant of Law and that Sara represents the Covenant of Grace or promise. Paul himself says that he is speaking figuratively, so I don't think we can get hung up on the fact that the Law was actually given through Sara's children! :-) Hagar represents those who are trying to earn salvation through the Law, while Sara represents those who receive as the fulfillment of a promise. Those who follow the Law are slaves, those who follow the promise are free. This is definitely a good example of way only inspired writers should use allegory! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
