1 | Scripturally, can women be pastors? | Gal 3:28 | Delta Echo Foxtrot | 144424
I need input on the validity of women as pastors. Many teach that it is not acceptable and quote the "let not a woman teach over a man" scripture. Still others say that the scripture which states that we are no longer "male nor female, Jew nor Gentile, etc. in God's eyes" means that men and women are or can be called to the pastoral ministry. I tend to think of that scripture, however, as relating to our spirits and not talking about vocations. There is a lot of literature on the "it's not allowed" side; however, can anyone give me reason, backed up by scripture, for the "it's okay to be a woman pastor" side of the issue?

I was just reading the latest excerpts on the forum and when it comes to women serving in the ministry - I believe the address of II John 1:1 was addressing a female pastor. I don't know if her husband was a pastor and may be passed away and the position became hers. But, Apostle John did not mention a husband; sounds like a single parent. Look at the scriptures outlined in the discussion of "Women being silent" and hear what the spirit of the Lord is saying. Be blessed.

Hello fellowlaborer, I'm not certain that 1 John 1:1 is "addressing a female pastor"? What leads you to that conclusion? The Amplified reads, "THE ELDERLY elder [of the church addresses this letter] to the elect (chosen) lady (Cyria) and her children, whom I truly love--and not only I but also all who are [progressively] learning to recognize and know and understand the Truth--" The Commentary Critical observes: "1. The elder--In a familiar letter John gives himself a less authoritative designation than "apostle"; so 1 Peter 5:1 lady--BENGEL takes the Greek as a proper name Kyria, answering to the Hebrew "Martha." Being a person of influence, "deceivers" ( 2 John 1:7 and her children from the faith [TIRINUS], whence John felt it necessary to write a warning to her." At any rate, I don't see it as a prescription for "female pastors"! Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Well, I have no profound answer. Most of the letters were written to a church...and usually the leaders were addressed. Thank you for the commentary excerpts... I am taking a turn, for I am not sure "elder" is a less authoratative designation for we find the elders around the throne of God Rev 4:4, 5:5 and, I do beleive one of the elders may be the Apostle John. Also, from the commentary excerpts, I extract this to be a woman of influence and even one who imparts instruction. My own deduction -- a pastor. :-) Thanks again. Be blessed! |
