1 | Self control and Spirit controlled? | 1 Cor 9:25 | 4me2liveisChrist | 49936
How is it then, that we are to be both self controlled, and be filled (controlled) by the Holy Spirit, Eph 5:18?
2 | Self control and Spirit controlled? | 1 Cor 9:25 | RAVEN | 49955
Ecellent question! It is impossible for us to be controlled by the Holy Spirit and then also excercise self controll. For this to happen we would be in the likeness of Christ. For Jesus was the only one to be fully human and fully diety and sinned not. Hebrews 4 15For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Each person is responsible for there own actions. If we were controlled by the Holy Spirit we would not sin, we could not sin, for God cannot sin. Romans 14 12So then each of us shall give account of himself to God. Eph 5:18 says to be filled with the Spirit. A person is filled with the Spirit by reading the Bible. Ephesians 3 3how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, 4by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), 5which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: Hope this helped with your question. Greetings Raven: Your statement, "A person is filled with the Spirit by reading the Bible." is not supported Biblically. I can read the Bible 'til the cows come home and beyond, but if I am NOT YIELDED to the control of the Holy Spirit, I cannot be filled by Him. Please read the following: (The following is quoted from page 2064, the Ryrie Study Bible Expanded Edition, Moody, 1986, 1995.) . . . "IX. THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT. . . . A. DEFINITION. A spiritual gift is a God-given ability for service. It is not a place of service nor a ministry to an age group nor a procedure. . . . B. DISTRIBUTION. 1) *Source* -- the Spirit (1 Cor 12:11). 2) *Extent*. Every believer has some but not all gifts (1 Pet 4:10). ... . . . C. DEVELOPMENT. Abilities can and must be developed by the one to whom given; e.g., the gift of teaching needs development by study. . . . D. DESCRIPTION. Lists of gifts are found in Rom 12:6-8; 1 Cor 12:8-10; 28-20; Eph 4:11. . . . X. THE FILLING OF THE SPIRIT. . . . A. DEFINITION. Being filled means being controlled by the Spirit (Eph 5:18). . . . B. CHARACTERISTICS. 1) Filling is commanded (Eph 5:18, the verb is imperative). 2) Filling is repeated (Acts 2:4; 4:31). 3) Filling produces Christlikeness (Gal 5:22-23). . . . C. CONDITIONS FOR BEING FILLED. . . . 1) *A dedicated life*. Yielding to the Spirit's control, though commanded, is voluntary and necessitates an act of dedication. This includes two aspects: initial dedication (Rom 12:1-2) and continual dedication of one's life (Rom 8:14). 2) *An undefeated life*. Victory over sin in daily experience is necessary in being controlled by the Spirit (Eph 4:30). This means responding to the light of the Word as it is continually revealed (1 John 1:7). 3) *A dependent life* (Gal 5:16). . . . D. CONSEQUENCES. Being filled or controlled by the Spirit means: 1) A Christlike character (Gal 5:22-23). 2) Worship and praise (Eph 5:18-20). 3) Submissiveness (Eph 5:21). 4) Service (John 7:37-39)." Hope this clarifies things for you! Mommapbs |

Hello Mommapbs Please try and understand that I am not saying that just because a person picks up the bible a reads that they will be filled with the Holy Spirit. But to be filled with the Spirit one must read the bible, open up their hearts and be willing to take what the bible says as THE INSPIRED WORD OF GOD. Not merly that it contains the Word, but that it IS the WORD. If you would re-read my post you would see that I was stating this. There are only two ways that a person can learn of the Gospel of Christ. 1. They can be preached to and 2. they can open up the bible and read for themselves. Either way by submitting to this and obeying, they thru study of the word will be filled by the Holy Spirit. Please read Romans 10 Israel Rejects the Gospel 14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace,[1] Who bring glad tidings of good things!"[2] 16But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "LORD, who has believed our report?"[3] 17So then FAITH COMES BY HEARING, AND HEARING BY THE WORD OF GOD. The Word of God (the bible) is the only thing we have, to learn about the will of God. 1 John 3 9Whoever has been born of God does not sin(meaning that we do not continue in sin), for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. Luke 8 The Parable of the Sower Explained (1) 11 "Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Luke 8 15But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, HAVING HEARD THE WORD with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience His seed is the Word which we read, like I stated in my last post, Ephesians 3 3how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, 4by which, WHEN YOU READ, YOU MAY UNDERSTAND my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), 5which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: Colossians 1 3 We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints; 5because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, OF WHICH YOU HEARD BEFORE IN THE WORD OF TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL, 6WHICH HAS COME TO YOU, AS IT HAS ALSO IN ALL THE WORLD, and is bringing forth fruit,[2] as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth; 7as you also learned from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, 8who also declared to us your love in the Spirit. Preeminence of Christ 9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you MAY BE FILLED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIS WILL IN ALL WISDOM AND SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING; 10that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and INCREASING IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD; The post you replied to was about being controlled by the Holy Spirit. Nobody can prove being controlled by the Holy Spirit. But we have the written word to help mold us an shape us into a form which God will accept us. Isaiah 64 8But now, O LORD, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand. Hope this helps you to understand my point. Raven |

Greeting Raven. I don't have any argument with your intentions. I only responded to this one line of your post, "Eph 5:18 says to be filled with the Spirit. A person is filled with the Spirit by reading the Bible." I believe this statement needed CLARIFICATION. Taken on it's own, I think you would agree that it could be very misleading! Blessings!
