Thank you for moving me to seek the Greek understanding as I do not know. From what I understand from 4:24 context and the following is a passage that I obtained from the study. The verse was in reply to a question by a Samartian woman who supposed that the true God could only be worshipped in a Temple of some form. To correct her essentially materialist view of worship, Jesus declared that God the Father, being spiritual by nature, can only be worshipped "in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24). Thus true worship does not require physical devices like temples, church buildings, wooden crosses, or any of the apparatus that was used by the Jews in their temple -- true worship is to make contact with God through the spirit in man, for God is Himself spiritual by nature. There is a real diference between "a spirit" and "spiritual". A man may be spiritual whether he has a physical body or not, because the word defines his nature, not his form or substance. Thus Abraham, who is a spirit in Paradise (the spirit world), is spiritual; but when he was on earth in right relationship with God he was also spiritual. Thus to be spiritual is not to indicate whether the person possesses a physical body or not. However, by your encouragement, I am learning my first Greek but I don't think we are to kiss like a dog licking the master's hand, among other translations if one insist on using the above translation. I am only trying to highlight that true worship is to make contact with God through the spirit in man, for God is Himself spiritual by nature. How would you define the spirit in man? Can I say that God only understand English, Greek or Hebrews? Then why not tongues? Did I said that only tongues get connected? What I meant was that at times when I pray in my native language or English for that matter, I felt that the spirit was not in me (shooting blanks) when I made that prayer but when I pray in tongues, I felt the spirit in me at these times. Perhaps I might have written something that might not be agreeable to someone but like I said at the first instance, it's my thoughts and my experiences with the Lord. I am not saying that everyone should do it but I do encourage it. If you disagree, fine! I will always remember the lesson that I am constantly encouraged by the Lord. Proverbs 3:5-6 God Bless. |

ngkh, Briefly on worship ... we don't prostrate ourselves before the Lord, as the despost - the absolute ruler over us ... nor do we think of Him in this manner ver often, if at all. I have more on worship ... read post 120794. I am concerned that you didn't feel the Spirit in you ... for He is in my heart (2 Cor 1:22). Also, as I pray, if I don't know what to pray for (not how to pray), the Spirit helps. He is the one who groans that words cannot express (Rom 8:26-27) ... and since there are no words and a language requires words ... even if we groaned - it wouldn't be a language. Moreover, the reason Paul spoke in more tongues (1 Cor 14:18), is because he spoke in the native tongues of the people, rather than Greek ... some of the same people were at Penecost (Acts 2) and heard the 120 speak in their own language. Tho Alex the Great made Greek the language, I believe most still spoke their own. Last note, if you pray in a tongue (another human language), your mind is unfruitful .. I wouldn't want that. Searcher PS When I pray in Japanese, my mind operates differently. I have done a study on tongues (read posts 116386 ... also 48618). |
