Greetings Azure! I love Dr. MacArthur, but he has a major blind spot when it comes to spiritual gifts. He has proposed several very unusual positions in his various books about spiritual gifts. In one, he proposes that the plural 'tongues' refers to a counterfeit gift, while the 'singular' refers to the true gift. Yet, in 1 Cor. 14:18, Paul says, "I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you." Notice the plural form of tongues! Is Paul saying that he uses the counterfeit gift more than they do? :-) In the quote you cited, Dr. MacArthur argues that 1 Cor. 14:2 is saying that the Corinthians were speaking in a tongue to a pagan 'god', not 'God'. Yet, in v. 5 of 1 Cor. 14, Paul says that he would like every one to speak in tongues. Is he saying that he wants them all to speak to a pagan god, since that is what they supposedly were doing in v. 2? In fact, his argument about 1 Cor. 14:2 violates his own position since he also argues that the singular 'tongue' always refers to the true gift of God. Dr. MacArthur tries to hard to discredit tongues, and by doing so, he twists the Scriptures on this topic. The only point that 1 Cor. 14 makes about tongues is that uninterpreted tongues 'only' edifies oneself and in a public worship service the goal is to edify others. Thus, interpreted tongues is fine (in a limited number), but uninterpreted tongues should be kept to oneself. I would take anything Dr. MacArthur says about spiritual gifts with several grains of salt. On everything else, he is awesome. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi Morant61 There are many more scriptures saying basically the same as this one, but I feel one is sufficient to convey the meaning of what is being said. Would this scripture be a fair assessment of Kenneth Copeland ministries? In light of scripture, how is it possible to endorse a ministry that has clearly twisted scripture? James 3:12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Hi Morant61 No Tim, to the contrary, I believe you are the one that has misread my post. The use of Mr. Copeland's name, was an example of someone I felt you, would never recommend to anyone. I then used your own quotes, about Mr. MacArthur, to demonstrate the fact, he is not to be trusted either. Based on the same criteria, used to judge Mr. Copeland. The bible being the sole authority, You would do well to take everything Dr. MacArthur says with several grains of salt. In your correction of Asure, as to her mistaken beliefs. Because this man was not someone to be trusted, and your admonishing her to beware, he then looses all credibility. Your own words, demonstrate, this man has intentionally taken the Word of God, set it aside, or twisted it to mean whatever he wanted it to mean, then voiced his own beliefs above those of the bible in "several very unusual positions in his various books". Thereby making merchandise of the body of Christ. In doing these things he labels himself as a deceiver. A deceiver is someone that we are to beware of. Vintage68 |

Sir, it has been my observance since your arrival to this forum that, you have taken and twisted the Scriptures for your own prepossess, and yet you have the gall to accuse and condemn others of that which is your own folly. No one is right all the time, including, myself, and including, yourself. Comparing Dr. MacArthur with Copeland is like comparing the devil himself to Pollyanna. Sheesh! | ||||||
