I completely agree, that is a completely legitimate gift of tongues. I do not agree that is the only gift tongues. Look up 1 Cor 12:10. The last part of that verse it says interpretation of tongues. Where one gift of tongues is to minister to people who speak a language other than your own, the other is to interpret or as some call it edification of the body. The last thing I will add is my own personal experience. If I am in a church which believes and allows the Holy Spirit to minister in this fashion I will sometimes know when someone is about to give a prophesy several minutes beforehand. Sometimes I will know beforehand what will be said, I believe this is the Holy Spirit bearing witness that it is valid (1 Cor 14:29). It is always scriptural, edifying and positive. I sometimes feel as though I am the one who is supposed to speak although I am to scared to, I think I should get over it. I have gotten up to speak and someone else starts speaking first and so I sit back down. This is all perfectly described in 1 Cor 14:27-33. Paul goes so far as to give very precise instructions on how it should occur. There are many who have seen people attempt to imitate these wonderful gifts and many have been hurt by this which makes me sad that so many should choose not to receive some of the wonderful gifts God has given the Church because of very few. I attempt to be sensitive to those who do not believe, so I usually pray and worship in the Spirit quietly so as not to offend. My only purpose for writing this is to testify of my personal experience of 1 Cor 14. There are real gifts of various tongues and there are those who counterfeit. Please do not throw away Gods gifts because of man. In Love Mike |

Dear Mike, I'm very sorry if you take this the wrong way, but God doesn't have any new revelation to add to the complete cannon of Scripture. If you want to edify your brethren then read and teach it to them in english, and stop playing church to make yourself look like you're spiritual or that you have arrived at some lofty hight of Christianity. 1 Cor 14:20 We do not base our faith on experience, (Heb 11:1) there are many, many people in many religious circles and pagan cults that can boast of the same things you are boasting about. (2 Cor 11:14) Be very careful not to rely on some spiritual experience. I've been there in churches just like the one you describe my friend, and fraud abounds! "So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church." 1 Cor 14:12 John |

Here is a general rosponce to the last couple. It is NEVER a new revelation of scripture. I appologize, but I was only attempting to relate how my experience aligned with scripture and how I have seen God's word experienced in my life! Also, the gifts (or gift) is not mine, it is for the Church, for its edification, exortation and conmfort. It is the Holy Spirit speaking the Living Word (Christ) through a man (prophet) to His people. It is nothing new. Sometimes a prophesy will confirm through the Word the message a pastor is about to preach on. Paul even said when he preached it was accompanied by miracles signs and wonders. These are not new revelations, they confirm God's word ONLY! Perhaps you don't believe it important for God to confirm His word, but this is the example all throughout scripture, what makes you think He would stop confirming His Word? In Love Mike |

Dear Mike, God has never stopped confirming His Word, but the confirmation of God's word is the Word itself -the Holy Scriptures- not speaking in tongues. I would urge you to stop focusing on the one gift and, focus on higher things, like preaching Christ and Him crucified. 1 Cor 2:1-2 John |

Speaking in tongues is not my focus, it is just a small piece of my life as a follower of Christ and the topic of this discussion. It also happens to be a gift I have recieved from God and a passion. It is a tool, one of many God uses for His Glory. It is not the main focus of my life, and I am fully capable serving God without it. I do however cherish every gift God has given me including speaking in tongues. I look at it this way, God gave us many tools to glorify Him, spread his Word and to lead people to Him. It's like I have a toolbox, sometimes the job calls for a hammer, sometimes for a screwdriver. It's just a tool in the toolbox. Some people choose to beat in a nail with the butt of a screwdriver, I'll use the hammer! In Love Mike |

Dear Mike, I don't see how you can say that speaking in tongues can lead anyone to Christ when, it is written: "Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad?" 1 Cor 14:23 How does that glorify Christ? Thats not a hammer... it's a nut. John |

John, That is funny! I should have clarified tongues plus interpretation or prophessy, sorry if that wasn't clear. I have seen plenty of nuts, there are LOTS of them, in fact I have acted like a nut in the past, but I grew up and matured. To clarify interpretation on tongues and prophessy only point to the cross of Jesus Christ. That is the litmus test, if Christ is not glorified it is a fraud, and I have heard my share of this. It is very sad. In Love, Mike |

Hi Mike, I'm glad you can see some humor, thats very encouraging! :-) We should never take ourselves too seriously. May I ask, Mike, how many people you have seen lead to Christ by speaking in tongues? I have never seen this, nor have I heard of any genuine conversion by doing so. I have though, heard of and seen, many, by preaching the word of God in intelligible words, and there are many, many thousands, no, millions, that have been lead to Christ by, simply giving out His Word in a clear, understandable way; and the power of the Holy Spirit works miraculously through His Word to effect conviction of sin and, faith in the heart of the unbeliever, destined for hell without having heard God's all redeeming Word of truth; spoken in clear, understandable words. By the way, Paul never encourages anyone to speak in tongues. In fact, he does a very good job of discouraging it. In fact, though he may say he wished all would, (and though he doesn't condemn it, though I'd say he comes pretty close and as so many take out of context that he wishes all would) he goes on to say: he would rather speak five intelligible words, that edify, then five thousand in tongues. He not only discourages tongues, but also urges them to grow up and seek higher gifts. So I would contend that speaking in tongues is not for a, mature Christian, but, for an immature one, who's faith is weak and needs some kind of sign to build up their faith. I urge you to take Paul's advice. On that note, I think this thread has run it's course and, will respectfully bow out. If you feel you need the last word, please feel free, you may do so. An added note: The 'Hammer' my friend, Mike, is, Christ, preached in understandable words, and Him crucified, preached in understandable words. Not, tongues. Shalom and God bless John p.s. I've really enjoyed our discussion, Mike, you've been very graceful. Thank you. |
