I completely agree, that is a completely legitimate gift of tongues. I do not agree that is the only gift tongues. Look up 1 Cor 12:10. The last part of that verse it says interpretation of tongues. Where one gift of tongues is to minister to people who speak a language other than your own, the other is to interpret or as some call it edification of the body. The last thing I will add is my own personal experience. If I am in a church which believes and allows the Holy Spirit to minister in this fashion I will sometimes know when someone is about to give a prophesy several minutes beforehand. Sometimes I will know beforehand what will be said, I believe this is the Holy Spirit bearing witness that it is valid (1 Cor 14:29). It is always scriptural, edifying and positive. I sometimes feel as though I am the one who is supposed to speak although I am to scared to, I think I should get over it. I have gotten up to speak and someone else starts speaking first and so I sit back down. This is all perfectly described in 1 Cor 14:27-33. Paul goes so far as to give very precise instructions on how it should occur. There are many who have seen people attempt to imitate these wonderful gifts and many have been hurt by this which makes me sad that so many should choose not to receive some of the wonderful gifts God has given the Church because of very few. I attempt to be sensitive to those who do not believe, so I usually pray and worship in the Spirit quietly so as not to offend. My only purpose for writing this is to testify of my personal experience of 1 Cor 14. There are real gifts of various tongues and there are those who counterfeit. Please do not throw away Gods gifts because of man. In Love Mike |

Hello Mike, I'd caution using personal experience to validate something such as this! You state that if you're in a church " which believes and allows Holy Spirit to minister in this fashion"? This seems to imply other chuches do not! How does a church "allow" the 3rd Person of the Godhead anything? Now, with that said, what does any of this have to do with proclaiming Christ and Him crucified? (1 Cor. 2:2) Where is the preeminence of Christ? (Col. 1:18) We should not be proclaiming ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord? The undue and never-ending emphasis on a fleshly gift seems to override our focus upon the risen Lord. May we seek to " know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;" (Phil. 3:10) Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
