Anyone can recieve the gift of speaking in tongues, all you do is ask, believe, and recieve. John 16:23 Jesus says,"Truly, Truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for ANYTHING in My name, He will give it to you." Eph. 6:18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit... We are not able to pray at all times in our own dialect, we would run out of things to pray about, but when you recieve the baptism of the Holy Ghost, you are then able to PRAY AT ALL TIMES!!! Speaking in tongues is a gift, so recieve it, its a way to speak to God with out satan knowing what you're praying about and its self edification. When you don't know what to pray for your Spirit ALWAYS knows what to pray for. With Love... Julia Marie |

Hi Julia Marie In going back to your original statement. You can now place that scripture in John 16:23 alongside this scripture which is totally within context. As a matter of fact the context of this scripture is only about PRAYER. Luke 11:1-13 But in order to find the full context of John 16:23, we need to also look at the following verse. John 16:24 24.) Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. So we can see from verse ( 24 ) your within the grounds of context. But there is that troubling piece at the beginning of verse ( 23 ) John 16:23 23.) "And in that day ye shall ask me nothing." This part of the verse actually refers to the preceding thought, which is about the disciples asking Him questions before His crucifixion which would be the next day. As far as your statement about Eph. 6:18 you judge it for yourself wether your belief is really correct, given that it says in 1 Cor. 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. If you are praying in the Spirit, praying in unknown tongues, then you are the only one that is being edified. I fully understand what you are trying to say about praying at all times, our (Language), is inadequate, besides when you are praying in the Spirit, you are being prayed for by the Holy Ghost, your also praising, and worshiping God. It isn't just our asking for things, how would your getting a new job edify you in the inner man? That would bring no edification at all would it. I believe Satan cannot understand the tongues of a prayer language God has given to His people for the sole purpose of their edification. Otherwise we may as well pray using our own language, and understanding. Those are the times when the Holy Ghost, takes the opportunity to pray with groaning's which cannot be uttered Rom. 8:26 Vintage68 |

Hi Vintage, If I may just step in here for some clarification of the verse in Romans that many use to bolster the legitimacy of speaking in tongues. Lets take a 'careful' look at it in the NASB, if you please. Romans 8:26 "in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;" What does it say about the groanings that the Holy Spirit intercedes with? Does it say the Holy Spirit speaks words? No, it says the groanings are 'too deep' for words. That means, no words. You cant have a language without words. So this verse actually means the opposite of what you and others are saying it means. Lets look at it in the KJV. v 26 "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." It says the groanings, "cannot be uttered." That would not mean that the gronings are some kind of language; because they what? Because they 'cannot' be uttered. Now the meaning of utter is, to send forth with the voice, or, to articulate, pronounce, or speak words. This verse clearly says that, speaking words or utterance to express these gronings, cannot be done because they are too deep for words. Now you may say: how can the Holy Spirit intercede without words? Verse 27, and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Because; "He who searches the hearts" (God the Father) "knows what the mind of the Spirit is" (God knows the mind/thoughts without words) "because He (the Holy Spirit) intercedes for the saints according to the will of God." The Holy Spirit knows the will of God, they are in perfect communication as two persons of the God-head and of the same mind. No words are needed because, the Holy Spirit already knows the will of God. I hope that helps John |
