Hi walkforchrist The answer to your question is "no" you do not have to speak in tongues in order to have the Holy Ghost, because you receive the Holy Ghost upon your conversion. In other words, you get the Holy Ghost when you get saved. As a note if you would like to take a look in the KJV. You will see the use of (the Holy Ghost) 89 times. I hope the following will suffice in clarifying some of your beliefs, and at the same time adding to your knowledge, we are told by Paul to seek a lot more than just speaking in tongues. I have added the brackets for greater clarification. 1 Corinthians 14 1.) Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, (but rather that ye may prophesy.) 2.) (For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men,) (but unto God:) (for no man understandeth him;) (howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.) 3.) (But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification,) (and exhortation, and comfort.) 4.) (He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself;) (but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.) 5.) (I would that ye all spake with tongues) ( but rather that ye prophesied:) (for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues,) (except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.) Now the question would be, why are the Pentacostal Churches the only ones advocating the use of tongues for the believer, if this is not supported in scripture? But as you can see, we have been clearly told by Paul, that it is for our edification that we (should speak in unknown tongues). Then for the edification of the church, if (we would prophesy, or interpret the tongues spoken) in the church. Now as far as misuses within the church setting, yes there are, but that confusion comes from MAN, not GOD. Man has from the beginning, corrupted everything God has ever given to Man. Whenever you are told by someone that this, or that is to be believed, question it. Ask for verification, just as you have done with the question you have asked today. Hope this helps. Vintage68 |
