1 | Apocrypha or Dead Sea Scrolls Helpful? | Rom 9:13 | Ted546 | 128444
This is going to sound like a stupid question. I have been studying predestination and free will. Now, that's been beat to death here, so I do not want an answer to it. What I have begun to notice is more worrying to me. When I stepped back it suddenly became clear that there was no answer. Or, more correctly, as I studied, the Bible contains no clear answer to this. As I begun to study some other classic arguments it was clear they persisted because they too lacked answers, not because one side studied less or did not get it. It should have been obvious to me before, but there it was. The Bible was inerrant, but must be incomplete for doctrine. Why else would such devout and faithful people disagree about so many basic issues? So, I wanted to know if anyone else has found any other things that have helped them, like the Apocrypha or Dead Sea Scrolls. I feel like I just need more information. Any recommendations on where to go now?

Greetings Ted546! First of all, welcome to the forum! Secondly, I would disagree that the Bible is not clear on these issues. I certainly don't want to open up that can of worms again on the forum, but I do believe the Bible has answers for your questions, provided you actually let Scripture speak. May I recommend three books that I have found helpful? 1) "Life in the Son", and 2) "Elect in the Son" by Robert Shank. 3) "Chosen but Free" by Norman Geisler. Not everyone will agree with the perspective of these books, but I found them very sound, especially the two by Robert Shank. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim, Thanks. The reason I think the Bible is not clear, is simply from watching too many really smart people who have studied all their lives disagree. If it was clear, that would not happen. I do not see many people arguing over whether or not Jesus is the Son of God. That's clear, we all agree. Agreement is a good evidence of clarity. The more disagreement the less clarity. Which makes me wonder about more information - just like if I was studying math and did not understand I would grab another text book. I am searching for more textbooks. And I am posting too much :) ! |

Greetings Ted! There is no limit on posting! :-) Not everyone though agrees that Jesus is God, or the Son of God! Agreement is not always evidence of truth. Though, if I were standing out in left field all by myself, I would certainly begin to wonder why! ;-) Though those who disagree with me would probably say the same thing about me, I feel that many cannot come to agreement on these issues because we have put our assumptions first, not Scripture. I don't really want to go into examples right now, since that would just start the debates up again. I would recommend reading the books I posted previously. As far as other sources, God's Word is all we need and it is the only real authority. For instance, the books I recommended above are only helpful inasmuch as they are truth to Scripture. Other 'un-inspired' sources are simply opinions, and everyone has those! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
