1 | Why does Jesus have 2 genealogies? | Rom 1:18 | ateo | 67518
Chris, Thanks. I read the site you referenced. It gave the same explanation others on this forum have given, namely, that one line was Joseph's and the other was Mary's. Since I don't buy this line of reasoning for a second, I was hoping someone could give me an explanation I hadn't heard before. ateo |

2 | Why does Jesus have 2 genealogies? | Rom 1:18 | Searcher56 | 67541
Scripture ... Jer 22:30, Mat 1:2-17, Luk 3:23-37 ... ateo, Do you have two genealogies? I know I do, one is from my father and the other from my mother. God cursed Jeconiah (also called Coniah), stating that no descendant of his would ever sit on the throne of David (Jer 22:30). Jesus by Joseph recieved the legal rights of Joseph to Jesus as a son, not the biological curse ... so there is a need for two genealogies Matthew gives royal genealogy of Jesus as King. A king who must have one a genealogy. Kings must trace their descent, to claim their right to rule, so begins with Abraham, and comes down to Jesus. In Matthew, after David, we have his son Solomon. the royal/ legal succession. Luke gives the human genealogy of Jesus as Man. A man needs a genealogy. Man must trace his ascent to some particular ancestor, starts from Jesus, and goes up to Adam and God. In Luke, after David, we have the natural and lineal line through Nathan, Solomon's elder brother. Searcher |

Searcher, It sounds like you're using the same arguments others have. I don't buy it b/c the writer in Luke doesn't mention Mary in the genealogy. I don't think it's intellectually honest to change the wording whenever the spirit moves you. Regardless, I'm really more interested in hearing other views about this question than I am debating the same thing I've heard over and over. ateo |

4 | Why does Jesus have 2 genealogies? | Rom 1:18 | Hank | 67572
ateo, what makes you think that there are "other views" on the genealogy of Jesus than Matthew's and Luke's accounts? Is your question rhetorical: do YOU have some other view? Or is it merely fashioned to stir up debate and controversy? On a former post I asked you to come clean and level with this forum regarding what a self-confessed atheist was doing here in the first place, but you have thus far not come forth with any explanation. You seem bent on hiding behind some guise that, in your view, prevents you from saying why you are an erstwhile Christian-turned-atheist. Unless you're willing to reveal your motive in being here and what you expect from this forum, I fail to see how you or we can benefit a great deal by rather pointless discussions of pi and the genealogy of Jesus. What are you seeking, ateo? If your motive is to come back into the fold of Christ, fine: how can we help? If it is, on the other hand, to stir up controversy and discredit the Bible, then not fine: buzz off! --Hank

Hank, "...what makes you think that there are 'other views' on the genealogy of Jesus..." There may not be. I'd just like to know if anyone has thought about it, and if so, what conclusions have you drawn? To give you an example, a Christian friend of mine seemed to think that "son" doesn't literally mean son, but rather descendent. I'm not going to argue his point b/c I can't remember all of his explanation. But, that's what I'm talking about. I'm not the first to raise this question here. Are you attacking others the way you are me, or is it something personal? What are you so afraid of? "...you're willing to reveal your motive in being here ..." I thought my user profile spelled it out clearly, but I'll give it one more shot. I'm here to discuss Biblical ideas. I'd be lying if I said I'm not interested in learning how Christians deal with "difficult" passages, but that's not the only thing I'd like to discuss while I'm here. In the meantime I think you should understand that free speech is not limited to those who agree with you. If you, or anybody else for that matter, don't like my questions and answers, then you don't have to participate. Find another topic to discuss. "...buzz off!" Ah, Christian love, it never ceases to amaze me. ;-) ateo |

ateo- In being in this forum, you should read the "about the forum" in the resource section to the left of the page. This is a discussion based on biblical ideas backed by proof verified by language translation, context usage and understanding culture of the time. I could think all kinds of things, but if they can't be verified, it is up to those who have a greater understanding of the bible than I do to correct me - and Praise God they are not afraid to! We have had too many people on this forum who do not want to truly understand the bible, who's minds are so set and who want to just cause divisivness and weaken the Christian's walk. In short, doing the devil's work. This is not a matter of free speech, but of what is appropriate to the nature of the forum. Debbie |
