1 | Debatable Issues | Rom 14:1 | kalos | 156586 | ||
Debatable Issues From time to time a forum user will invoke Romans 14:1-12 as a principle we should apply whenever Christians disagree about anything. They misuse Romans 14 when they attempt to apply it to an issue that is not debatable, e.g. an issue that the Bible clearly identifies as sin. The following quote from carm.org addresses the issue of nondebatable issues. 'Of course, there will be those who say that this is a debatable issue and that we should not declare someone's opinion to be authoritative and then force that opinion upon others. Doesn't Rom. 14:1-12, when speaking of debatable issues, declare that we should be gracious to those with whom we disagree? Yes, it does, but we must realize that because someone debates an issue does not mean it is inherently debatable. Mormons, for example, will debate whether or not people can become gods since they affirm it is possible. But the Scriptures clearly teach they cannot (Isaiah 43:10). Therefore, just because it's debated does not mean it is debatable' ____________________ www.carm.org/questions/womenpastors3.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. 2 Tim 4:3a NIV |

Hi Kalos, Thanks for bringing this up! This is why I want to encourage everyone who participates in this forum to base everything on Scripture. That way, we can know just what has been clearly spelled out, and what is subect to our own conscience. It is only after an exhaustive search of God's Word that we can declare something a matter of personal opinion. Isn't Romans 14:1-12 talking about our liberty in Christ, and that if a brother, as a matter of conscience, doesn't think he should do something, like eat at the Krishna temple, or boogie board on Sundays, that the "stronger" brother should not try to convince him otherwise, lest he cause him to sin against his own conscience? And that maybe I should think twice about boogie boarding on Sundays, because my brother is having a problem with it? Does Romans 14 have any application to matters of Theology, Ecclesiology, or the other ologies? What do you think? Love in Christ, Mark |

Mark: NASB Romans 14:1 Now accept the one who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of passing judgment on his OPINIONS. (Emphasis added.) I think Romans 14 probably applies to "secondary non-essentials", including, but not limited to, pre-, mid-, post-trib rapture, premill, preterism, predestination, election, cessation of the charismatic gifts, and baptism for adults or infants. Grace to you, Kalos 'Secondary Non-Essentials 'The [following] subjects . . . whether affirmed or denied have no bearing on the status of a person before God. They are OPINIONS, various positions held. Unfortunately, it is in these non essentials that many denominational differences result. 'SUBJECT '- Predestination, election, limited atonement, and free will '- Communion every week, monthly, or quarterly, etc. '- Saturday or Sunday Worship '- Pre, mid, post trib rapture. '- Premill, Amill, post millenialism, preterism. '- Continuation or cessation of the charismatic gifts '- Baptism for adults or infants 'IMPORTANCE Secondary Non-Essentials Any of them can be denied, or affirmed, and regeneration is not in question. Hi Kalos, I agree with you that any of these things may be misunderstood or not understood at all, and salvation is not at issue, so long as we are clear on repentance, substitutionary atonement, and faithfulness. By "secondary non-essentials", you are referring then to anything outside of the immediate and neccessary requirements of salvation? As I look at the examples Paul gave in Romans 14, all are related to personal lifestyle. The parallel passage to this is 1 Cor 10 (the latter portion), which is also giving examples of lifestyle rather than doctrine. Your thoughts? Love in Christ, Mark |

Mark: I agree. Romans 14 is talking about lifestyle, not doctrine. That's why when you asked, "Does Romans 14 have any application to matters of Theology, Ecclesiology, or the other ologies?", my reply was "I THINK Romans 14 PROBABLY applies to "secondary non-essentials..." What debatable lifestyle issues and secondary doctrine have in common is: - whether affirmed or denied they have no bearing on the status of a person before God. - Any of them can be denied, or affirmed, and regeneration is not in question. - Denominational differences often result due to these issues. But, no, I misspoke if I implied that doctrinal differences, however minor, are in the same category as debatable lifestyle issues. Romans 14 is definitely not discussing doctrinal differences. Moreover, differences in doctrine are not "just" opinions, if the emphasis is on the word "just". Someone will say, "Well, that's just your interpretation, or just your opinion." Of course it's someone's interpretation. Of course it's their opinion, but it's not just those things as long as people are not simply sharing their point of view, but are also sharing their reasons why they have that point of view. Neither am I saying that every doctrine or passage of Scripture has two or more equally valid interpretations. That is simply not true. (It seems that the more I write, the more I have to clarify so that others who read this will not misunderstand my meaning. :-)) Mark, I truly appreciate your questions because they challenge me to stop and think more carefully before I reply. Hi Kalos, Thank you for your clarification, and its my pleasure and edification! You know, anytime I try to edit something for brevity and clarity, you can count on it becoming twice as long, and near impossible to understand! ;-) Love in Christ, Mark |
