Schmythe It seems Pastor Glen has answered this question for me but let me add some thoughts. I have never been a big proponent of what is often done on this forum, that is to provide a proof text. By that I mean provide a scripture that seems to prove your point. In some cases this can be done but often does not give a full understanding of the question or answer. In other cases the verse is ripped from scripture and literally means something completely different. God's word is complex and complete, most often the flow of a paragraph, chapter, book and/or the whole Bible must be understood before the true revelation of God's word is understood. Obviously there are times when a verse does in fact serve the purpose, however in most of these cases this is answer to a question like who was David's Father or which judge visited Delilah. When it comes to doctrine, reasons for people's action or behavior many times we need to read more than a verse or two. I find proof texting completely and absolutely annoying when people try to proof text complex issues like salvation, eternal security, election, predestination, and such. These issues are so involved, that to get a complete understanding of them you have to view the whole Bible not looking for words or phrases to prove your point but rather to understand the our overall relationship with God and how God deals with us His children. The reason so many argue over what the Bible says is because they do proof text. If you will read, understand and follow the Bible as a whole, the arguments melt away. Today people read the Bible to find answers forgetting the Bible is the answer. By that I mean the answer isn’t one or two verses, the answer is the whole and complete Bible. Many times people looking for answers get a verse or two and run with it while in fact the true answer was completely different than the answer they found. In the case of this question. The people were ruled by God in Theocracy (the most perfect form of government) however there was no “wiggle” room. God being perfect gave perfect law and this didn’t allow for many “what if’s” and certainly not for any sin. In the book of Judges we see the people going through the cycles that many experience in their Christian lives. When tragedy or adversity enters our lives we draw closer to God, but as we experience the good times our thoughts are less spiritual. This coupled with the necessity of having to have a man worthy enough to receive God’s leadership became their problem. In other words you have to have a relationship with God to get His direction. The people cried out for a King like everyone else had. The pattern for this wasn’t laid out in one verse or two it was the pattern we see in the people since God brought them out of Egypt. God clearly explains the reasoning for this in 1 Samuel 8:1-9 but you would have to read Exodus to Samuel 8 to get the background to understand the people’s real motives. Yes the answer can be found in verse 1 Sam 8:8-9 but to understand what God is saying you have to read the whole story. EdB |
