1 | Is hearing necessary for salvation? | Rom 10:17 | disciplerami | 76504
Greetings, Does this verse teach, "only the Spirit of God can give understanding"? "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments; His praise endures forever." - Ps. 111:10 Does this verse teach, "only the Spirit of God can give understanding"? "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." - Pro. 9:10 Does this verse teach, "only the Spirit of God can give understanding"? These passages say that wisdom begins when we fear the Lord. Do you agree that fearing the Lord requires a degree of spiritual discernment? If so, why must we conclude that only Holy Spirit intervention can "give understanding of spiritual things"? The discernment which 1 Corinthians 2 speaks of is required by God of all sinners. Since He has made himself known to all men through the creation and through the proclamation of the Gospel, why isn't that evidence, that message, sufficient to give understanding? I conclude it is. Spiritual discernment is a choice. That's my three cents. Have a good day. :) |

Certainly worth a penny more. Thank you. Indeed it is a jump to use Ps. 111:10 and Pro. 9:10 as proof that "only the Spirit of God can give understsanding". True, fear of the Lord is spiritual discernment, and I cannot conclude that only the Spirit can give understanding of spiritual things. As you have stated, Paul teaches that creation is an evidence of God which should lead men towards him. That seems as though God expects spiritual discernment of everyone. |

3 | Is hearing necessary for salvation? | Rom 10:17 | disciplerami | 76576
Greetings Sniper, I'm glad to see we agree. I would add-for the sake of those who might misunderstand my position--thatI believe the Spirit is giving the understanding of spiritual things through His inspired Word. The nature of the Word itself, is such that it has power to convict. This is why the Holy Spirit directed that all men hear the good news, that it might convict and bring men to repetance. Concerning your first question, hearing is necessary for salvation because what does a person believe if he has not yet heard? I've heard people say that salvation precedes even the hearing of the Gospel, but I don't think that is a supportable position. Have a good day. |
