Inmyheart, I'm curious about your definition of "tongues" as the Bible typically uses the word, not only in Paul's Corinthian letter but in Luke's book of Acts. How would your definition of "tongues," and consequently your argument, hold up for instance, if you were to substitute for "tongues" the English synonym "languages" -- or more specifically "foreign languages," a term that the contexts of these passages seem to support? Does it strike you that possibly the original intent and meaning of Paul's discourse on tongues to the Corinthians has been given a modern spin that may be materially different from the meaning of the original correspondence? --Hank

In the past I have heard so much controversy over “speaking in tongues” that caused me to question my belief in the Baptism on the Holy Spirit “speaking in tongues”. Was it really a prayer language? Who gave this to me? Well, for the answer I had to go back to when I was 17 years old. When I was 17 years old I accepted Jesus in my life and became new borne Christian. I didn’t know much about the bible (was learning though) and I walked by faith. When I was at church the preacher ask if anyone wanted to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. As a new borne Christian I wanted everything God had to offer. I went up and the pastor said praise God and I was praising and he lade his had on me and all of the sudden I was praying in am unknown language. I did not make up funny sounds nor did the pastor ask me to repeat wired sounds. All he said was give praise to God. At the age of 17 I new this: 1. I knew whom my Lord and savoir was (Christ Jesus) 2. I walked by faith not by sight. 3. I ask my Father for a fish and he did not give me a snake. At the age of 35 I now this: 1. I know whom my Lord and savoir is (Christ Jesus) 2. I walked by faith not by sight. 3. I ask my Father for a fish and he did not give me a snake. Mat 7:9 Or what man is there of you, if his son asks a loaf, will he give him a stone? Mat 7:10 Or if he asks a fish, will he give him a snake? Mat 7:11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Father in Heaven give good things to those who ask Him? 4. I do not hold “speaking in tongues” above salvation through Jesus. Nor will I ever say you have to “speaking in tongues” to be saved. Talking like that is foolishness. 5. It is one of many gifs and does not edify anyone but your self. 6. Without love what good are our spiritual gifs? 7. Isn’t teaching a spiritual girt? 1Co 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. 1Co 12:29 [Are] all apostles? [are] all prophets? [are] all teachers? [are] all workers of miracles? 1Co 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? 1Co 12:31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way. I know what is true in my heart and what was given to me from God and I hold it dear as a wonderful gift. And I thank God for the other gifts that He gave me that I use to edifies the body in the name of Christ Jesus. Most of all I thank God that he gave me love and compassion for my brothers and sisters in Christ. |

Papa Chapa: How would you define -- biblically, not subjectively or experientially -- the New Testament teaching of the baptism of the Holy Spirit? Cite biblical references, not personal experiences, if you will, please. --Hank

Hank, After looking at you user info I see that "Cite biblical references" will not change anything. I decline and will not ague the point and for you Hank, I will try not to use my personal experiences in the future to answer your questions. I wont make a promise though :-) Your brother in Christ, PapaChapa |
