Regarding the never-ending debate about tongues, a debate which on this forum goes on and on and on and on: It seems that people never tire of the tongues debate and never, ever reach a conclusion. But what does the Bible say about getting stuck on one pet doctrine? [Huron: Please know that I am not aiming this post at you. The Scriptures I quote are not limited in their application to the debate about tongues, but could be applied to any number of subjects. In fact, this post does not address tongues one way or the other. It attempts to address going round in circles over basics, when we should be making progress toward maturity. Grace to you! --Kalos] Hebrews 5:11-14 New Living Translation 11There is so much more we would like to say about this. But you don't seem to listen, so it's hard to make you understand. 12You have been Christians a long time now, and you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things a beginner must learn about the Scriptures. You are like babies who drink only milk and cannot eat solid food. 13And a person who is living on milk isn't very far along in the Christian life and doesn't know much about doing what is right. 14Solid food is for those who are mature, who have trained themselves to recognize the difference between right and wrong and then do what is right. The AMPLIFIED Bible 11Concerning this we have much to say which is hard to explain, since you have become dull in your [spiritual] hearing and sluggish [even slothful in achieving spiritual insight]. 12For even though by this time you ought to be teaching others, you actually need someone to teach you over again the very first principles of God's Word. You have come to need milk, not solid food. 13For everyone who continues to feed on milk is obviously inexperienced and unskilled in the doctrine of righteousness (of conformity to the divine will in purpose, thought, and action), for he is a mere infant [not able to talk yet]! 14But solid food is for full-grown men, for those whose senses and mental faculties are trained by practice to discriminate and distinguish between what is morally good and noble and what is evil and contrary either to divine or human law. * * * * * * * * * * * * * www.seekfind.org Christian Search Engine The mission of SeekFind.org is to provide God-honoring, Biblically-based, and theologically-sound Christian search engine results in a highly accurate and well-organized format. |

Kalos, Thanks for replying. In a lot of ways I agree with you, in some I don't. Tongues does not seem to be a basic doctrine. To me, basic topics include the life, death, burial of Christ, believing in His name and his being God, being baptized as a believer, fellowshipping with other believers, and witnessing to others. I would bet that if we were to go get a cup of coffee somewhere we would see that we agree on a LOT of things. Just to let you know where I'm coming from, I've been a believer about 25 years. Now I'm revisiting all of the "truths" that I had been taught to make sure that I had not run in error. I'm hoping to examine the best arguments for and against tongues being for today. I've seen arguments that made sense for both views. I'm not a newby to the Word having read the NT through over twenty times, and the entire Bible several times. I appreciate your input. What are your views of tongues? |

Huron: Good to hear from you. You write: "Tongues does not seem to be a basic doctrine." When I was writing my previous post, I used "basic" for want of a better word. (I'm not sure what word I should have used, but "basic" wasn't it. Probably I should have used the word primary or fundamental.) Like you, I think you and I might agree more than we disagree. By the way, you can read what I believe about any number of Bible subjects by using the Search function whose link appears in the upper left hand portion of the Forum page. When the Search page comes up, under "were submitted by user" type in the name kalos I commend you on your re-evaluation of what you've been taught. You have the right idea. That's the best thing anyone can do. In recent years I've been doing it myself. I have learned much through forum participation and have had to rethink and sometimes re-align my views to line up with what the Bible says. It is my pleasure to admit when I am wrong and gain a better, more accurate understanding of the Bible. I will gladly tell you my understanding of what the Bible teaches about tongues, but I'll do that in a separate Note, which I'll start on right now. In fact, what I should do is post the best arguments I've found for and against tongues being for today. Then I'll tell you what I personally believe. That would make 3 posts.
