1 | Are you being put to the test? | John 6:6 | Ray | 73801 | ||
Hi Searcher 56, If I were a teacher and this had been a test, I would give you a high grade. Especially as I am a person interested in capitalization. :) This certainly is the application that can be made for our lives; that is, to put our trust in God in all circumstances rather than in the "mighty dollar". However, I was thinking of what can be learned about God in the fact that Philip was tested. For instance, I came up with this question as I compared the "He Himself" passages of John 6:6 and John 2:24,25. Why would this Man who was doing things [signs] in the name and authority of God, who knew all men; why would he test this disciple, Philip? The margin references in my Study Bible for John 6:6 are 2 Corinthians 13:5 and Revelation 2:2. Any comments on them as far as testing is concerned? From the heart, Ray |

I think that Jesus wanted Philip to know where he was at. A good teacher should know where their students are (this is very rare, since it takes time) - the test proves it and shows the student his strengths and weaknesses. It is up to them to improve. 2 Corinthians 13:5 may apply to this. I think Revelation 2:2 is a stretch for John 6:6. |

Hi Searcher56, The test then is for the student's benefit to show the student his strengths and weaknesses. Jesus wasn't asking for help was He, for the question was asked for a test of Philip. I think that the bottom line is that Jesus is a good Teacher. As Jesus says in John 6:45, "It is written in the prophets; 'AND THEY SHALL BE TAUGHT OF GOD.'/ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. 46 Not that any man has seen the (Father)..." John 13:13, "You call (Me) Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. If I then, the Lord and Teacher,/ washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet." Though the (Son) is not the (Father), they are both one Teacher/. They both spoke the word of (God). The word of God, the Scriptures, in John 6:6, 2 Cor 13:5, and Rev 2:2 have the word "test" in them. I believe that a "word study" is a good thing even if the verses do not seem to be related to each other. Here in Revelation 2:1, I see it talking about the (One) who walks among the seven golden lampstands, who says this...verse 7, He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit/ says to the churches." A word study of "walk" would reveal many verses of walking in (Him). For instance, Colossians 2:6. I think that Philip was doing pretty well at this stage, and Jesus doesn't give him a grade that I know of (sometimes a test in school is enough without our knowing the averages). But we must constantly be testing ourselves, testing the spirits, so that we can build each other up so that we can be complete in Him. Colossians 1:28. From the heart, Ray |
