"You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?" Note: Paul is not saying they are doing these things to gain salvation, but on the contrary they are doing these things thinking it was pleasing to God and therefore profitable for sanctification. The problem with your argument is "works of law" and "The Law" are not the same thing. As MJH has attempted to explain, Galatians is not about circumcision per se, but ritual conversion to Judaism. If that were the case, Paul would never circumcised Timothy. Without a proper understanding of the complexities of 1st Century Judaism (of which The Way was a sect--not a completely new religion), most of the New Testament is doomed to be misinterpreted. |
