Bible Question: Thanks for your reply kelly. I am aware of the purported dates of the gospel writings and, I'm not sure that simply a date qualifies a text for inclusion in the NT. Even though the gospels were written perhaps long after Jesus died, they still contain material that does not "fit" the overall NT theme of believing in the death of Jesus Christ and the shedding of His Blood for the forgiveness of sins. That's what the pastor I mentioned was noting. Recall that Jesus told one person to keep the commandments and then follow Him in order to gain eternal life. Jesus did not say: Believe in my death and resurrection (which will take place). Thus, Jesus would give an OT response to questions about salvation in the gospels. Why doesn't Jesus talk about His death to everyone who asks about salvation? The pastor I mentioned thinks that's what qualifies the gospels as OT books. It's not until Paul that a clear understanding of salvation is presented. Again, the pastor's view that the gospels are not NT sounds very odd to me. What does the BibleStudyForum community think? |
Bible Answer: Hi Robbert: Welcome! Just my humble opinion, sir, and certainly not to disparage the pastor, but perhaps it would be substantively efficacious for your pastor friend to find something Just a little more instructive to teach on, rather then digging around looking for ways to relabel the books of the Bible. His assertions are quite a stretch, to say the least. It seems to me he skimmed right over Jesus' death and resurrection, while looking for something rather obscure or arcane, perhaps in order to appear astute. I think it's a lot more edifying to focus on Jesus Christ; "For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified." 1 Cor 2:2 "For indeed He was crucified because of weakness, yet He lives because of the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, yet we will live with Him because of the power of God directed toward you. Jesus and Him crusifide." 2 Cor 13:4 "Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life." Rom 6:4 "knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him." Rom 6:9 "But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you." Rom 8:11 Just my two cents John |
