1 | Does Jesus teach OT doctrine? | John 1:1 | Robbert | 211559
Thanks Doc. The pastor I mentioned I hear on Paltalk, and he is a midacts dispensationalist who I think has very odd notions. To clarify his point, he states that salvation is only possible today by believing in the death and resurrection of Jesus. That's something that couldn't be done in the gospels since Jesus hadn't yet died. One could know about Jesus' divine nature, etc. as you state, but could not believe on Him for the forgiveness of sins. Paul alone provides that information. I'd appreciate any further help on understanding this issue.

Hi, Robert... Actually, people could, indeed, believe in the atonement of Christ before it took place. They wouldn't know the details, but the truth of God carrying out His eternal purpose was known long before. When Able, Abraham, and Aaron made sacrifices they were picturing that atonement. We believe in a new heaven and new earth. Just because we don't know the details of that future setting, doesn't mean we will only be able to believe it after the fact. :-) God reveals the work He is doing gradually over time. We have the blessing in some of those things to be looking into the past, and seeing with greater detail how, what, when, where, and who (Romans 16:26). Those who lived before Christ did not have that blessing of that information, though they diligently sought it out (1 Peter 1:10). Even the angels didn't have this benefit (1 Peter 1:12b). Paul's invaluable teaching gives us an added blessing of insight into many things. Nevertheless, "the Holy Scripture is the only sufficient, certain, and infallible rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience." That statement is true regardless of where a man lived chronologically. God has always made sure that His elect had all the revelation they needed for saving knowledge, faith, and obedience. Adam had the increased light of the protoevangelium. Abram had the increased light of God's immediate promise and command. David had the increased light of the Pentateuch. Zacchaeus had the increased light of the teaching of Jesus. We have the increased light of the exposition of the apostles, a closed canon. Adam, Abraham, David, Zacchaeus, and ourselves have each had the Word of God sufficient for saving knowledge, faith, and obedience. In Him, Doc |
