Verse 23 says, "And Jesus answered them, saying, 'The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.'" His glorification must be preceded by his death and resurrection. In context, Jesus may be saying that His death is the key to others' spiritual life and fruitfulness. And unless WE die to self and the old man is crucified with Him, we will "live" only to ourselves and then die ("will lose it"). Christ is our life (Col.3:4) and we who have given our lives to Christ "have died and [our] life is hidden with Christ in God" (v.3). It is interesting that in our pre-faith "life" we are described as "dead in trespasses and sins" (Eph.2:1) and in our faith-filled life we have "died with Christ" (Rom.6:8) and are "dead to sin" (v.11). So, once dead IN sin, now dead TO sin. Perhaps Gal. 2:20 says it all, "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me." Hi, Phil! Excellent point! That is why Paul is so secure in what he tells the us in Romans: If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord (Romans 14:8) Christ gave His Life so that we may gain ours--but our life is in Him! God Bless! Angel |
