1 | Luke 4:18:19 and Isaiah 61:1-2a | Luke 4:18 | retxar | 19068
In Luke 4:18-19 Luke records Jesus reading Isaiah 61:1-2a in the temple. The words Luke recorded here are not word for word the same as Isaiah reads in our English translations, tho the meaning is the same. Is this because the translation that Jesus read from was different than our English translations? Or is it different for another reason? Thanks, retxar |

2 | Luke 4:18:19 and Isaiah 61:1-2a | Luke 4:18 | Makarios | 19069
Greetings retxar! "The quotation is chiefly from the Septuagint, or it is a free rendering of the Hebrew (with one part taken from Isa. 58:6 and the rest from Isa. 61:1, 2)." (New Commentary on the NT) The scroll that Jesus was using is pretty close to the Septuagint, which could be described as a 'dynamic equivalence translation' of the Hebrew Old Testament into Greek. The NASB Old Testament was translated by using the latest edition of Rudolf Kittel's Biblia Hebraica. And we must not forget that the NASB translators used a 'formal equivalence' philosophy (word for word) to translate the Hebrew into English. So if Jesus was quoting from the Septuagint, then every word that Jesus said would be from that translation and that specific "wording" would also be included in the Greek manuscripts of Luke, regardless of which translation philosophy that is applied to translate Luke. In this way, we can see that the "wording" of specific NT quotes of OT verses may be a little bit different, but the idea is always the same. This further supports the promise that God's Word will endure forever, and that Scripture will never be broken! I hope that this helps.. - Nolan |

Thanks Nolan, You have confirmed for me exactly what I had shared with another brother elsewhere a while back. His interpretation of “God's Word enduring forever” is that it has to remain in tact, word for word, jot for jot, tittle for tittle (he was KJO), otherwise it cannot claim the title as “God’s Word”. I gave him this example in Luke to show him that Jesus did not share the same view as he did, because what Jesus read was only perfect in the since that the message God originally inspired was conveyed exactly as God intended. Jesus confirmed the actual words of the translation when he said “This day is this scripture fulfilled IN YOUR EARS” (Luke 4:21 KJV), even tho it was not a word for word translation of Isaiah. This left him searching for answers, because it did not exactly fit with his KJO position. I pray that the Holy Spirit will be allowed to work in this situation. Thank you for being the other “witness” I needed to confirm what I felt the Holy Spirit had revealed to me to share with this brother. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established (2Co 13:1b). Thanks, retxar |

Greetings retxar! You are welcome, my friend! I feel grateful that I can be that 2nd witness to help reveal the truth! (2 Corinthians 13:1). I know KJV Only Advocates and their arguments, and you did an excellent job with your explanation! Also, here is something else: the reading in Luke 4:18 and Isaiah 61:1 is also different in the KJV.. :) I am grateful for the opportunity to be of assistance, my friend! Jesus Lives! - Nolan |

Hi Makarios, We also have the difference in interpretation as shown by the capitalization in Isaiah 61:1 of the three words of "Me". The NKJ capitalizes "Me" to show the idea of the fulfillment of the prophecy. Personally, I go with the NASB and see Jesus Himself fulfilling the prophecy as He reads it in the synagogue. Luke 4:16, "And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His/ custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. 17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And (He) opened the book, and found the place where it was written, 18 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon ***Me Because He anointed **Me to preach the gospel to the poor, He/ has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are downtrodden, To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.'" Isaiah 61:1, "The Spirit of the Lord God/ is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflected; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives, And freedom to prisoners; 2 To proclaim the favorable year of the (Lord), And the day of vengeance of our God;...So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that ***He may be glorified." 1) Isaiah 61:6, "But you will be called the priests of the Lord; you will be spoken of as ministers of our **God." Luke 4:18, "...because He anointed **Me to preach the gospel to the poor..." May He be glorified as the anointed One of God. From the heart, Ray |
