Hi! I just heard a short presentation on this yesterday. Apparantly the shepherds were considered very low class people. Being a shepherd was a low calling for a Jew. Maybe like being a beggar or something today. I guess it was to show that recurring theme that the last would be first, and the first last. The Shepherds came to Jesus with nothing, just themselves straight from the field. It shows we don't have to get all dressed up to come to Jesus, but just as we are. I am relaying this from a short sermon I heard yesterday, I hope it came handy! Dan |

Perhaps also, Dan, it is no mere accident that one of the best-known and most-beloved titles for Jesus is the Good Shepherd. And the most famous Psalm of them all is the 23rd, the Shepherd's Psalm. And you're quite right, the shepherd was on the lower rung of the economic and social ladder in the Paltestine of Jesus' time. How easy God made it for the poor of the earth to identify with His Son!...... I like the quote from Abraham Lincoln: "God must have loved the common people because He made so many of them." --Hank | ||||||
