1 | Will we recognize each other in glory? | Luke 24:1 | RElderCascade | 3167
"O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!" If Jesus didn't want them to recognize Him why would he go into such length talking about himself. LukeĀ 24:26 "Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?" LukeĀ 24:27 Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. The text only says; "their eyes were prevented from recognizing him." Of course that doesn't mean that God didn't do it to them, but usually the Gospels make that clearer if God did something to someone. I would prefer to conclude that they were just as shook up as Peter and the others a few verses later. There it talks about they thought they'd seen a ghost! Anyone can be unable to believe their own senses if the otherwise unbelievable occurred. |

Good observation.. Yes, I do not believe that the Lord "kept" them from recognizing Him, its just that they were shaken up and did not realize that it was Him. Nelson's NKJV Study Bible puts it this way, "24:11.. Skepticism reigned among the disciples. It is clear that they did not expect a resurrection." And 24:24, "As far as the disciples were concerned, there was no decisive proof of Jesus' resurrection. They wanted to see the resurrected Jesus. Thomas was not alone in his doubts (see John 20:25)".. So this 'proof' that they needed was not revealed to them until Jesus made it obvious to them that He rose from the dead indeed!

Thanks for your consideration of my posting. You pick up on the same thing that seems to be large in the scriptures, the state of unbelief is of inestimable concern to the biblical authors. I might add that is the believer's concern as well, only it is different in degree or at least disimilar in hardness to those who are unsaved. But who are regenerated must always make request to God to help us in our unbelief. So we are not terribly unlike the apostles who really didn't expect our Lord to rise from the dead. In what ways do we seem related to them in our lives, as we consider what God is doing now? However, I have no idea if we will recognize each other in glory, I wonder why ask the question, we either will or we won't. But the discussion of it is a great opportunity to expose our basis of belief, and our attitudes about what we want. But most of all we can consider this to be a growth experience, whereby we can consider ourselves and our condition. |
