1 | Is it by works or by grace? | Luke 11:8 | kalos | 57812
You write: "You only have to pray once asking for what you want." May I ask -- precisely where do you find this idea in the Bible? Give us the book, the chapter and the verse that teaches "You only have to pray once asking for what you want". What the Bible does say in plain English is: "Keep on asking and it will be given you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking [reverently] and [the door] will be opened to you." Matt 7:7 (Amplified) The meaning of the parable in Luke 11:5-13 is easily understood when read in context. This is not rocket science. Luke 11:5-13 (ESV) And he said to them, "Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves, [6] for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him'; [7] and he will answer from within, 'Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything'? [8] I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. [9] And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. [10] For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. [11] What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; [12] or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? [13] If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" How much more will the heavenly Father give to those who ask him! |

2 | Is it by works or by grace? | Luke 11:8 | geevee | 57823
Hi Kalos Here is the Scripture I was quoting. Mark 11:23 "Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him. Mark 11:24 "Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you. If you believe that you have received them, why would you keep asking God again and again for what you believe you have already received? Of course, we should constantly pray prayers of Thanksgiving, but I don't believe you have to pray asking for what we desire, again and again. If my interpretation is wrong, let me know with Scripture. GeeVee |

3 | Is it by works or by grace? | Luke 11:8 | retxar | 57831
Greetings GeeVee, I can understand what you are trying to say, but if we use the example of Jesus Himself, praying the same prayers, whether praise or request is not wrong, does not shoe lack of faith, and in fact is exactly what we should do until God has revealed to us that our prayer has been answered. Mat 26:39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will." Mat 26:42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done." Mat 26:44 So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Notice that Jesus not only prayed the same prayer again and again but He prayed it again, again, and again, and He even used the SAME WORDS! Pray without ceasing! retxar |
