1 | When is the sabbath? | Mark 2:26 | flossiejane | 140464
The Bible says: (I forgot the verses I was reading sorry) When Moses went up to Mt. Sinai (sp?) to get the Commandments from God the second time since the first ones were broken it said that Moses ate no bread and drank no water for forty days and forty nights. Also it says that when Moses came down from the mountain after talking to God that the "skin of his face was not shone" and from what I gathered it scared the people so it went on to say that Moses put a veil over his face until he got inside the church to talk to God but after he left the church he put the veil back on. What does "the skin of his face was not shone" mean? Also, we were debating the "forty days and forty nights" statment. My belief is that forty days and nights its just a metaphor for a long period of time and not exactly a month and ten days. My second question in the bible (once again I don't remember the verses) it says that you are to rest on the sabbath and anyone caught working on the sabbath should be put to death. It also says you are not allowed to have a fire in your house on the sabbath. What I want to know is does God make exceptions to these rules? I know that Jesus said something like if your cow falls in a well on Sunday you won't let it die or something to that effect. Also how do we know what day the sabbath is? Christians say its Sunday but Jews say its Saturday and Jesus was Jewish so that must mean to Jesus the sabbath is Saturday. How do we know what day it is? Like when God was creating heaven and earth it talks in terms of "days" but how do we know how long a day is to God? A day could be minutes, hours, or even years. How do we know what Gods concept of time is? Now going back to the sabbath, I know that it says God rested on the seventh day. If you start your week on Monday then naturally seven days is Sunday but we don't know what "day" God started creating the earth and us. So how do we know which day is the sabbath? Do you think we will ever truly know what the real day is? Thank you and I hope someone will be able to give me better answers then the other ones I have received. |

2 | When is the sabbath? | Mark 2:26 | cantool | 140465
Under the 'Old Covenant' or the 'dispensation of Law', God gave Israel a pattern to follow to symbolize righteousness in order to show that His people were set apart from the rest of the world, that they were His people. Christ came to set God's (His) people free from the Law, which God knew was imperfect. He had to do this in order to formulate His "ultimate" plan of salvation which would last until the incarceration of Satan takes place. The Sabbath now is the time when each of us (Christians Only) sets aside to worship and pray and study His Word to edify our spirit-man so our natural way of thinking and acting will die so Jesus will be exalted through the renewing process, (reading and meditating on the Word of God). The countenance of Moses was the Glory of God all over Moses, such as in the Gospel's account of the 'Mount of Transfiguration". And yes, man can do extraordinary things while in the presence of God! |

Cantool... You state "Under the 'Old Covenant' or the 'dispensation of Law', God gave Israel a pattern to follow to symbolize righteousness in order to show that His people were set apart from the rest of the world, that they were His people. Christ came to set God's (His) people free from the Law, which God knew was imperfect. He had to do this in order to formulate His 'ultimate' plan of salvation..." On forum we try to be pretty precise about doctrinal statements. We try to state things with as much scriptural backing as we can provide. Therefore, based on your statement above, would you please provide references (book, chapter, and verse) for the following: 1. How is the Law a "pattern?" 2. How does following the Law "symbolize righteousness?" 3. Where is it said that "Christ came to set God's people free from the Law?" 4. Where is it said of anyone that they are "free from the Law?" 5. At the "incarceration of Satan" does the plan of salvation cease in some way? I think that'll do for starters. I'd include more questions, but, after all, its Christmas Eve. :-) In Him, Doc |

Doc And others I've offended, In my zeal to answer a post authored by flossiejane, I do need to ask for your forgiveness for making a couple of incorrect statements that I couldn't back up with scripture. To answer Doc's inquiries to what I can readily provide, here goes it: The statement of "free from the law" should truely be "free from the curse of the law"(Gal 3:13). The Law itself was not imperfect, but was made imperfect because man is of a sinful nature (Rom 7:4-14., Rom 8:3). The "pattern" that I stated in my original answer was made in reference to the way God's people should live:(Leviticus/whole)(Exodus 20). And because God is holy and righteous, the Law, decrees, and regulations mediated through Moses were a reflection of His righteousness. I agree Doc, "symbolize" was not a good use of the alphabet! To answer the last of the questions concerning 'salvation'; According to Revelations 21:1-4, the old order of things have passed away with the passing away of the present heaven and earth and Jesus also confirms this in Mat 5:18. I do appreciate the members of this forum being biblically savy!! Your faithful brother in Christ, Cantool |

Thanks, brother Cantool! Good clarification, there! Great scriptural support! I wasn't offended. Actually there are a number of folks in the forum who are dispensational along with a number that are more covenantal in their perspective... even a few of the neo-covenantal persuasion. I figured you meant one thing but were saying another. :-) I do that myself sometimes! Clarity can help the less knowledgeable to understand sound doctrine, and can help to distinguish us from those who actually promulgate false doctrine. Additionally, we ourselves can be benefitted by being corrected if we find our views to not be doctrinally sound. As you participate in the forum -- and I really hope that you continue to do so! -- you'll find we are well represented in all of these categories! :-) In Him, Doc |
